I met with Dr. Gerasimova and immediately she was open to my joining.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For over a year, Greenberg has been in the process of creating targeted deoxyribosimes that pinpoint drug-resistant mutations in bacterium such as <em>E. coli<\/em> to help physicians in providing the proper drug treatment for their patient.<\/p>\n<p>Greenberg\u2019s focus on <em>E. coli<\/em> bacterium relates to his interest in solving a fairly common medical diagnosis; the urinary tract infection.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>E.coli<\/em> bacterium make up to 90% of what is found in the urinary tract in light of infection,\u201d said Greenberg. \u201cI was inspired to create a diagnostic test because of how common UTIs are but how difficult they are to treat, often because of antibiotic resistance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After many days and nights spent in the lab, Greenberg created a probe that could actively detect antibiotic resistance in the bacterium culture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCOVID-19 impeded a lot of progress, but even so I was able to create a working probe,\u201d said Greenberg. \u201cCurrent methods of tests for UTIs take up to 72-hours for diagnosis, but even with that diagnosis it isn\u2019t guaranteed that your medication will work. This is the problem I\u2019m hoping to solve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As a future physician, Greenberg plans on exploring his options but points to clinical research as something that ignites his inner passions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cResearch really excites me,\u201d said Greenberg. \u201cIt gives me the chance to be as creative as I am scientific.
