{"id":28027,"date":"2021-03-16T16:20:42","date_gmt":"2021-03-16T20:20:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=28027"},"modified":"2023-06-06T11:47:02","modified_gmt":"2023-06-06T15:47:02","slug":"research-medical-outcomes-for-certain-women-significantly-improve-with-more-female-doctors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/research-medical-outcomes-for-certain-women-significantly-improve-with-more-female-doctors\/","title":{"rendered":"Research: Medical Outcomes for Certain Women Significantly Improve With More Female Doctors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-28028 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2021\/03\/Kenicia-Wright-September-2018-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2021\/03\/Kenicia-Wright-September-2018-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2021\/03\/Kenicia-Wright-September-2018-299x399.jpg 299w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2021\/03\/Kenicia-Wright-September-2018.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/>Assistant Professor Kenicia Wright, Ph.D, is challenging perspectives through her research focusing on the interplay of race and gender.<\/p>\n<p>The School of Politics, Security, and International Affairs faculty member\u2019s most recent accolade is winning the American Political Science Association\u2019s 2021 \u201cBest Paper on Race and Intersectionality Award.\u201d The award comes from APSA\u2019s Women, Gender, and Politics section.<\/p>\n<p>The paper examines the positive outcomes that result when non-Hispanic white women, non-Hispanic black women and Latinas are treated by women physicians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a certain empathy, care and understanding that comes with a woman treating a woman,\u201d Wright said. \u201cThe medical outcomes for certain women significantly improve with increases in women physicians.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The findings from her study that supports this point are improved maternal and infant mortality rates when female physicians are involved. Wright found a 25% increase in women physicians contributes to an 8% decrease in the preterm birth rates of non-Hispanic blacks and a 3% decrease in the preterm birth rates of non-Hispanic white women. There is also a 4% decrease in the maternal mortality rates of non-Hispanic black women and a 2% decrease in the maternal mortality rates of non-Hispanic white women as the percent of women physicians in a state increases.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough the research conducted we can conclude that\u00a0women physicians have the ability to significantly improve the health of women in the US.,\u201d said Wright.<\/p>\n<p>Wright encourages students interested in following her footsteps to never let their fears discourage them from pursuing their dreams.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I could, I\u2019d tell my younger self that she\u2019ll have fears\u2026but that should never stop her,\u201d said Wright. \u201cIt is better to do things scared than to not do them at all.
