A former UCF film student\u2019s viral videos recently landed him a dream gig producing a dark comedy TV series narrated by comedian Bill Burr.<\/p>\n

UCF alumnus Tyler Falbo, BFA \u201914, \u00a0created, wrote and directed the series, then collaborated with Burr and comedian Bobby Lee to bring \u201cImmoral Compass\u201d to life.<\/a> The stories are often crude and designed to make the viewer squirm, but Falbo sees a higher purpose in dark humor.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe live in a weird and dark world, and hopefully these kinds of shows can make light of how screwed up we’re capable of being,\u201d Falbo said.<\/p>\n

Falbo first pitched \u201cImmoral Compass\u201d in early 2019 and it eventually found a home on the Roku streaming service. Burr introduces each episode directly to the camera, with guest appearances by comedians like Vince Vaughn, Lee, Lori Petty and David Dastmalchian furthering Falbo\u2019s goal of \u201cmaking people feel bad for laughing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"\u201cThere was no money in it for them, so to have people like (them) is a miracle in my book,\u201d Falbo said.<\/p>\n

While the star power and production value have improved, \u201cImmoral Compass\u201d is just another step in a long line of dark comedy shorts for Falbo. His passion for filmmaking began in high school.<\/p>\n

\u201cFilmmaking is a really good way to present ideas,\u201d Falbo said.<\/p>\n

Falbo first started gaining attention on his YouTube channel<\/a> with films such as \u201cMoving in<\/a>\u201d and \u201cEviction Notice.\u201d<\/a> Once accepted into the film program at UCF<\/a>, Falbo quickly dove into making short films for both his class and own enjoyment. He met Cornelius O’Donoghue, BFA \u201814 during one of his film classes, who would later become the director of photography for all 10 episodes of \u201cImmoral Compass.\u201d<\/p>\n

O\u2019 Donoghue recalls a weird first impression of Falbo, but they soon connected over their shared passion for film.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt that moment I never knew how much I would be working with him,\u201d O\u2019 Donoghue said. \u201cThat\u2019s the thing with film school, you\u2019re in odd locations sometimes with odd people and it creates interesting shared experiences that you\u2019ll never forget.\u201d<\/p>\n

O\u2019Donoghue is not the only person Falbo continued to work with after graduation. Mike Collins, BFA \u201814 served as the gaffer for all 10 episodes of \u201cImmoral Compass\u201d along with Olivia Wilson, BFA \u201919 who worked as the first assistant camera position.<\/p>\n

Falbo also gives credit to Jon Bowen<\/a>, who serves as the operations manager for the Film Program.<\/p>\n

\u201cI always got wrapped up in conversation with him surrounding technical stuff, and I think if I had to pick any faculty member that helped and guided me the most, it would be him,\u201d Falbo said. \u201cI learned specifically why it wasn’t about the gear as much as how you use it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Falbo carried the lessons learned from his time at UCF with him as he worked on his first show in California, saying that there were quite a lot of similarities between making short films and working in the studio system. A big shared connection was making the most of what you have.<\/p>\n

Viewers can watch \u201cImmoral Compass\u201d on Roku devices, Roku TV’s, Amazon firestick, Samsung TV’s, or in browser on computer or phone.<\/p>\n
