They received the honor after NASA\u2019s 2021 Breakthrough, Innovative and Game-Changing (BIG) Idea Challenge Virtual Forum in November 2021.<\/p>\n<p>As part of NASA\u2019s BIG Idea Challenge to conquer lunar dust, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/nasa-selects-ucf-honeybee-inspired-spacesuit-material-design-for-further-development\/\">project<\/a> \u2014 titled Lunar Dust Mitigating Electrostatic micro-Textured Overlay, or LETO \u2014 provided an opportunity of a lifetime to design, form and test new innovations to get the researchers on NASA\u2019s radar.<\/p>\n<p>With the theme centered around lunar dust, the UCF team designed a space suit material overlay for astronauts performing space exploration. The moon\u2019s surface is covered in sharp, hazardous lunar dust that could be a danger to people and equipment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur group was familiar with creating polymer-based composite materials, so we saw it as a great opportunity to further expand our knowledge in the field and contribute to the space industry,\u201d says team member <strong>Yuen Yee Li Sip \u201917\u201919MS<\/strong>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree\/materials-science-and-engineering-phd\/\">Ph.D. student studying materials science and engineering<\/a>. \u201cI greatly appreciate the research that I do, to be able to combine two or more components in one and create new materials with various properties.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Their new design uses the microstructure of bee hair, hoping to simulate the capture and release of pollen. These hair-like fibers work similarly to remove lunar dust via electric field signals.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_125546\" class=\"figure float-left c4\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"figure-img size-medium wp-image-125546 img-fluid lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/files\/2022\/01\/WEbAdamjpg-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/200;\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"figure-img size-medium wp-image-125546 img-fluid lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/files\/2022\/01\/WEbAdamjpg-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/200;\" \/><figcaption class=\"figure-caption\">Undergraduate student Adam Rozman<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThis project required tremendous innovation to solve unexpected issues and predict the expectations of the review panel of accomplished experts in the field,\u201d says team member Adam Rozman, an undergraduate researcher in the <a href=\"https:\/\/mae.ucf.edu\/\">Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering<\/a>;. \u201cI am honored that I had the opportunity to work with the brilliant, devoted, and creative team at Dr. Zhai\u2019s lab to bring this project to fruition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The team also included <strong>Nilab Azim \u201920MS \u201921PhD<\/strong>, a recent graduate with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree\/chemistry-phd\/\">doctorate in chemistry<\/a>; <strong>Alex Burnstine-Townley \u201916<\/strong>, a doctoral student in the <a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/chemistry\/\">Department of Chemistry<\/a>; <strong>Trisha Joseph \u201920<\/strong>, a recent graduate with her bachelor\u2019s in <a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/physics\/\">physics<\/a>; Nicholas Alban, undergraduate researcher in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ece.ucf.edu\/\">Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.<\/a> The team is led by advisor Lei Zhai, a professor of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nanoscience.ucf.edu\/\">Nanoscience Technology Center<\/a> and the Department of Chemistry in the <a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/\">College of Sciences<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the future, the team hopes to study these materials in high vacuum and further their design. The plan is to build another team with some original team members interested in this area of research, and some new members with a background in working under these constraints.<\/p>\n<p>The Lunar Dust Challenge is just one of NASA\u2019s annual themes from their Breakthrough, Innovative, and Game-changing (BIG) Idea Challenge.
