(Photo credit: Justine Goupil-Barsetti)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The time-consuming process of piecing together broken pottery vessels found during archaeological excavations is getting a boost from artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>Pottery provides key insights into how ancient people lived, but most archaeological sites uncover pottery in broken sherds. To use this evidence to its full potential requires piecing them back together like a jigsaw puzzle to figure out how the vessels were made and used, explains UCF Anthropology Associate Professor Scott Branting, Ph.D.<\/p>\n<p>Improving the accuracy and speed of this reconstruction is the goal of an international collaboration between UCF and mathematicians and computer scientists at the Universit\u00e9 du\u00a0Qu\u00e9bec\u00a0\u00e0\u00a0Trois-Rivi\u00e8res (UQTR).<\/p>\n<p>UQTR Professor of Mathematics Alain Goupil, Ph.D., pitched artificial intelligence to reconstruct pottery in 2018 after visiting <a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/anthropology\/kerkenes\/\">Kerkenes<\/a>, an important Iron Age \u201cmegacity\u201d in the central Turkish province of Yozgat. Kerkenes is the focus of a broader international archaeological project directed by Branting. Goupil was astounded by the complexity of the process of reconstructing pottery vessels, particularly those with many missing pieces.<\/p>\n<p>UQTR graduate student \u00c9tienne Beaulac, working with Goupil and Professor of Computer Science Fadel Toure, Ph.D. spent the last two years developing a solution to this problem using artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cResearch revealed shortcomings in the existing deep learning methods used for object reconstruction,\u201d said Beaulac. \u201cUsing Siamese Convolutional Neural Networks proved to be an elegant solution to this vexing problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_29421\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29421\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-29421\" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2022\/06\/UCF-Kerkenes-UQTR-2-300x206.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"206\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2022\/06\/UCF-Kerkenes-UQTR-2-300x206.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2022\/06\/UCF-Kerkenes-UQTR-2-1024x704.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2022\/06\/UCF-Kerkenes-UQTR-2-768x528.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2022\/06\/UCF-Kerkenes-UQTR-2-1536x1057.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2022\/06\/UCF-Kerkenes-UQTR-2-2048x1409.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2022\/06\/UCF-Kerkenes-UQTR-2-299x206.jpg 299w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2022\/06\/UCF-Kerkenes-UQTR-2-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-29421\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The neural network identifies areas of contact (linked gold circles) between different sherds, using photographs such as this, to assess how likely different pieces are to join together.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The current accuracy rate for identifying adjoining sherds using AI is 98.3%. The team at UQTR expects to advance these methods from 2D pictures of the pieces of the objects to 3D scans in future years. Goupil notes there are broader applications to this object reconstruction technology in areas like forensic science.<\/p>\n<p>Assistant Director of the Kerkenes Project, doctoral candidate at the University of Toronto and visiting UCF scholar at UCF Dominique Langis-Barsetti, said, \u201cthe Kerkenes Project has always been keen to develop innovative solutions with collaborators from other disciplines who can offer different perspectives on the challenges we face in understanding the evidence and interpreting the past.\u00a0 This partnership between UCF and UQTR holds great promise for advancing computational methods within archaeology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The time-consuming process of piecing together broken pottery vessels found during archaeological excavations is getting a boost from artificial intelligence.
