That\u2019s according to newly published research from <a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/biology\/abl\/\">Aquatic Biogeochemistry Lab<\/a> Supervisor and Associate Professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/biology\/\">Biology<\/a>, Lisa Chambers, Ph.D., and Jennifer Bennett \u201920.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The research is the product of intensive soil sampling across the university\u2019s arboretum and natural lands, followed by laboratory analysis of those soils for physicochemical properties and soil carbon content. Findings confirmed Chambers\u2019 and Bennett\u2019s hypothesis: Wetlands store about 16 times more carbon than uplands. They estimate that there are areas of campus that have been wet for at least 5,000 years based on how much soil carbon is there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The research findings highlight the important role that green space serves in urban areas. For instance, a landscape designated as \u201curban\u201d is typically assigned an ecosystem value of nothing, Chambers says. But in reality, urban wetlands and patches of greenery serve an important function as a carbon sink, helping to off-set the fossil fuel consumption often occurring directly adjacent to them.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-medium\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2023\/05\/Core-Sampling2-scaled-e1685041686501-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30160\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2023\/05\/Core-Sampling2-scaled-e1685041686501-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2023\/05\/Core-Sampling2-scaled-e1685041686501-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2023\/05\/Core-Sampling2-scaled-e1685041686501-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2023\/05\/Core-Sampling2-scaled-e1685041686501-299x399.jpg 299w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Lisa Chambers<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>While soil carbon reservoirs naturally exist, Chambers and Bennett hope to show how they help avoid releasing carbon back into the atmosphere. Leveraging them can help alleviate some of the problems created by increasing carbon emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSoil\u2019s not just dirt under our feet,\u201d Chambers explains. \u201cThe soil and organisms that live there make everything else on earth work. It\u2019s a part of our ecosystem that serves vital functions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, the research provides easily discernible landscape features that can identify areas where a lot of carbon is stored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt helps people who manage natural areas and make infrastructure decisions,\u201d explains Chambers. \u201cIf they\u2019re aware of the broader global function that green spaces provide, they can help minimize the impact to carbon reservoirs.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-medium\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2023\/05\/Core-Sampling3-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30162\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2023\/05\/Core-Sampling3-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2023\/05\/Core-Sampling3-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2023\/05\/Core-Sampling3-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2023\/05\/Core-Sampling3-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2023\/05\/Core-Sampling3-299x399.jpg 299w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2023\/05\/Core-Sampling3-scaled.jpg 1440w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Jennifer Bennett<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Chambers plans to use the information from this research project as she continues future work which will examine vegetated coastal ecosystems, including mangroves, marshes, and seagrass beds. An internal seed grant from the College of Sciences will be used to do a \u201cblue carbon\u201d inventory at<a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/biology\/facilities\/econfina-river-field-research\/\"> UCF\u2019s Econfina River Field Research Station<\/a> in the state\u2019s Big Bend region.
