{"id":30610,"date":"2023-09-15T09:47:10","date_gmt":"2023-09-15T13:47:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=30610"},"modified":"2023-09-25T09:40:26","modified_gmt":"2023-09-25T13:40:26","slug":"nicholson-school-of-communication-and-media-among-unity-workforce-grant-recipients","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/nicholson-school-of-communication-and-media-among-unity-workforce-grant-recipients\/","title":{"rendered":"Nicholson School of Communication and Media Among Unity Workforce Grant Recipients"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Nicholson School of Communication and Media\u2019s Games and Interactive Media (GaIM) program is among the recipients of <a href=\"https:\/\/unity.com\/grants\/workforce-grant\">a $150,000 grant<\/a> that will help empower the next generation of diverse games professionals.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2023 <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.unity.com\/news\/the-path-to-a-global-creative-workforce\">Unity Workforce Grant<\/a> from Unity Social Impact and Jobs For the Future (JFF) prepares future creators for in-demand careers in games, XR and the metaverse. NSCM was among those selected from more than 700 submissions to support the next generation of real-time 3D creators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grantees were selected based on their proposals\u2019 attention to inclusion, impact, viability and career development.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNow, more than ever, we have a responsibility to equip young people with the skills necessary for future jobs \u2013 providing them with learning that translates to earning,\u201d said Jessica Lindl, vice president of social impact at Unity. \u201cI\u2019m thrilled with the winners of the Unity Workforce Grant and am confident that these institutions will continue to provide equitable access to education and workforce opportunities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This grant will support the purchase of additional hardware, software and the creation of new course content and programs for both GaIM and the central Florida community through partnership schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The work supported by the grant is led by three GaIM faculty: Undergraduate Coordinator and Industry Liaison David Negrin, Deputy Assistant Director Peter Smith and Assistant Professor John T. Murray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur team in GaIM is thrilled to embark on this project with support from JFF and Unity, the vanguard of digital innovation and a transformative force in the global game development landscape. With this grant, we will expand our program and bring the craft of game development, cutting-edge extended reality (XR) technologies, and the promise of the metaverse to the communities of Orlando and Central Florida,\u201d said Negrin.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Murray authored the first UCF undergraduate course dedicated to XR.
