But the same qualities that make us laugh also make the restaurant the perfect subject of study by cultural anthropologists like Professor Ty Matejowsky, Ph.D. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Matejowsky specializes in how food shapes and informs a culture, with past projects including a study into fast food in the Philippines. The book brings an academic approach to defining Waffle House as a microcosm of the South without losing sight of the absurdity that defines it as a cultural touchstone.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance, only a month after the book was published, Waffle House entered the zeitgeist with a viral video of an employee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-11595417\/Texas-Waffle-House-worker-caught-chair-thrown-unruly-customer-claims-BLACKLISTED.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">deftly catching a chair<\/a> in the middle of a fight. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Matejowsky starts with the concept of Waffle House representing the South, just like McDonald\u2019s is a stand-in for America on the global stage. It\u2019s not an identity Waffle House officially advertises, but a generally accepted organic concept.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Waffle House is a shorthand way of describing the South, \u201cespecially a no-frills, down-home version of the South,\u201d Matejowsky said. \u201cThat resonates with people.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-medium\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"195\" height=\"300\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2023\/10\/smothered-and-covered-book-cover-1-195x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30763 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2023\/10\/smothered-and-covered-book-cover-1-195x300.jpg 195w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2023\/10\/smothered-and-covered-book-cover-1-299x461.jpg 299w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2023\/10\/smothered-and-covered-book-cover-1.jpg 649w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 195px) 100vw, 195px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 195px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 195\/300;\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>He then unpacks the duality of what that represents, both the warm Southern hospitality and a dark history of racism. He also explores the idea that Waffle House belongs to everyone, from renowned chefs like <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/anthony-bourdain-waffle-house-clip\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Anthony Bourdain<\/a> to musicians like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/2023\/05\/02\/the-artistic-allure-of-waffle-house-americas-most-surprising-culinary-muse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">John Mayer<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TasKo5HHWb4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jonas Brothers<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/food\/news\/lana-del-rey-waffle-house-alabama-rcna95985\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lana Del Rey<\/a> all embracing the eatery.
