She was one of three UCF faculty members who selected the asteroid landing site for the recently returned OSIRIS-REx spacecraft. She\u2019s also partnering with her colleague in the Department of Physics Associate Professor Addie Dove, Ph.D., on a $35 million mission to land a spacecraft on the moon\u2019s unexplored <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/nasa-selects-ucf-for-35-million-mission-to-the-moons-mysterious-gruithuisen-domes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gruithuisen Domes<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s pretty humbling to be chosen as a rising star,\u201d she said.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Xia specializes in chemistry and biomedicine, with a focus on artificial enzymes. Natural enzymes in the body perform tasks like breaking down proteins in the small intestine and converting starches to sugar. Enzymes built in the laboratory use inorganic materials like metal, which improves durability and efficiency.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Xia\u2019s research focuses on their utility in diagnostic tests. One of the most recognizable examples is the modern COVID-19 test, which provides quick results at the expense of reliability. The goal of Xia\u2019s research is similar tests that can accurately test for serious illnesses like cancer.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m honored to be selected as a rising star,\u201d
