Whether discussed in the context of education, the workforce or everyday life, it is certainly making a large impact. According to the program\u2019s website, UCF\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/ai.ucf.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Artificial Intelligence Initiative (Aii)<\/a> aims to hire close to 30 new AI faculty members from across five different colleges: College of Sciences, College of Engineering and Computer Science, College of Medicine, College of Optics and Photonics and College of Business.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This initiative aims to provide top-quality AI education for UCF\u2019s undergraduate and graduate students\u2014empowering them to change the world with new technology.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2023\/11\/Photo2022\u5c0f-1024x1024.png\" alt=\"HanQin Cai headshot\" class=\"wp-image-30902\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2023\/11\/Photo2022\u5c0f-1024x1024.png 1024w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2023\/11\/Photo2022\u5c0f-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2023\/11\/Photo2022\u5c0f-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2023\/11\/Photo2022\u5c0f-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2023\/11\/Photo2022\u5c0f-299x299.png 299w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2023\/11\/Photo2022\u5c0f-144x144.png 144w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2023\/11\/Photo2022\u5c0f.png 1370w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/statistics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Department of Statistics and Data Science<\/a> Endowed Assistant Professor and Data Science Lab Director HanQin Cai, Ph.D. plays a critical role in this initiative as a member of the executive committee. Cai teaches \u201cStatistical Foundations of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence II\u201d at UCF and is passionate about training students to discover the many exciting possibilities of AI.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About Cai\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Cai joined UCF as a seasoned AI expert. Before UCF, he worked for UCLA where he worked on the mathematical and statistical foundations of data science and machine learning, essential components of AI. One of his most significant projects proposes a novel data sampling strategy that is flexible and easy-to-implement in real applications such as recommendation systems. The flexible data sampling method can potentially save millions of dollars in survey costs for data-driven businesses like Amazon and Netflix.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Statistics and AI: A Dynamic Duo&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When asked how statistics relates to AI, Cai replied, \u201cIt\u2019s everywhere. Statistical data is used for AI modeling.\u201d Understanding statistical principles like how to sample data forms the backbone of AI.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBig data is a challenge for the AI community, and how to utilize that data is a big question. Statistics plays a huge role in analyzing and processing the data,\u201d said Cai.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">AI in Academics&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAI is a new opportunity and a challenge,\u201d Cai explained. It helps students easily locate the information they need, but they still have to know which questions to ask ChatGPT, as sometimes ChatGPT\u2019s answers can be substantially different when the question is slightly altered.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cai shared that although there are some concerns over AI and academic integrity, it is like any new technology. New technologies are always met with resistance, but he believes that AI will be adopted and integrated appropriately into the classroom. It\u2019s just a matter of learning and adjusting.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt some point, AI will become an essential part of our everyday life, including the time in the classroom. The school has to adapt to this powerful tool that can help students obtain knowledge in a more efficient way than ever before. However, AI is a double-edged sword, teachers must teach the class in more innovative ways to enhance AI-assist study and prevent AI-based cheating.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">AI Careers: What to Know&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There has been talk of AI replacing jobs, but it\u2019s important to keep things in perspective. \u201cThe person using the technology is just as important as AI,\u201d said Cai. While he admitted that some tedious jobs may be replaced in the future, he said that people will have the opportunity to apply their skills to more creative, less monotonous roles. This opens opportunities for new jobs that didn\u2019t exist before because \u201ccreativity is something that AI isn\u2019t good at yet,\u201d shared Cai.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>What kinds of careers are available in AI? <\/em>Cai explained that AI crosses many industries and businesses. There will be many job opportunities for years to come.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cai suggests that students take his \u201cStatistical Foundations of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence II\u201d and other AI classes offered across campus if they\u2019re interested in an AI career.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For those who want to switch careers, Cai said, \u201cIt is never too late to start using a computer, it is never too late to pick up smartphones and it is never too late to have an AI-enhanced career.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/statistics\/graduate\/phd-big-data-analytics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Explore our Ph.D. in Big Data Analytics here.<\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Talk of AI is all around.
