Under twinkling lights and spirited applause, the College of Sciences Scholarship Dinner gathered students, faculty and donors to celebrate academic achievement and the transformative power of philanthropy. The evening was more than a formal event \u2014 it was a testament to how financial support unlocks opportunity, fuels ambition\u00a0and shapes futures across the university.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n

This was the first\u00a0scholarship dinner\u00a0that I have ever attended during my time at UCF.\u00a0As an almost three-time alumni from UCF, I\u00a0am currently pursuing my doctorate in Strategic Communications from the Nicholson School of Communication and Media (NSCM).\u00a0So, as you can imagine, receiving not only one but two scholarships have helped me immensely during these critical years.\u00a0I have been honored to receive the Dr. Burt Pryor Fellowship Fund as well as the Dr. Milan D. Meeske Memorial Endowed Scholarship.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf you need any proof that the College of Sciences can throw a party, look no further,\u201d\u00a0says\u00a0Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs\u00a0<\/em>Dr. John Buckwalter\u00a0as he gestures towards\u00a0the audience.\u00a0\u201cThe turnout is so impressive and I\u2019m so excited to be here on this special night,\u201d he echoed the sentiments of everyone in that room, me included.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou worked hard, showed\u00a0resilience\u00a0and made the most out of every opportunity that you had. Scholarships are more than financial\u00a0awards;\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0investments in your future,\u201d says\u00a0Buckwalter. Those words\u00a0couldn\u2019t\u00a0have been\u00a0more true,\u00a0because\u00a0not only was I a scholarship recipient, but I was also working at the event.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You may\u00a0have seen my name under\u00a0articles being published by NSCM for the past few years because\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0also the Content Writer for the\u00a0Nicholson News<\/a>, and now partnered with the College of Sciences, I have the wonderful opportunity to capture even more meaningful events around the university.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When addressing the donors,\u00a0Buckwalter says, \u201cYou open doors, you make opportunities\u00a0and you change\u00a0lives. You are a difference-maker. These scholarships are\u00a0making a difference\u00a0in the lives of our students in our institution. Your generosity means more than dollars\u00a0\u2013 it\u00a0means belief in our students\u2019 potential\u00a0that when you invest in them,\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0investing in the future of our university, our\u00a0community\u00a0and our state.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As\u00a0Buckwalter ends his remarks, I snap photos\u00a0away, inspired by his words.\u00a0He finishes his speech by saying,\u00a0\u201cTonight is more than dinner, it\u2019s a celebration of trajectory.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reid Nicholson, son of\u00a0benefactors Tony and Sonja Nicholson,\u00a0also\u00a0resonates with these\u00a0remarks\u00a0when he says, \u201cEvery year\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0special coming here to see\u00a0each and every\u00a0student and\u00a0learning\u00a0about\u00a0the promise of what\u00a0they\u2019ll\u00a0do.\u00a0We\u2019reinvesting in\u00a0that\u00a0promise.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I looked around, touched by all\u00a0of those that made this event possible.\u00a0As a took photos of the audience clapping after each speaker, I felt grateful to the donors whose commitments to investing in students\u2019 futures created opportunities that extend far beyond financial\u00a0assistance.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Olivia\u00a0Feild,\u00a0a\u00a0Dean\u2019s\u00a0Advisory Board Member of the College of Sciences,\u00a0mirrors this view by saying, \u201cAs a student\u00a0who\u00a0also has\u00a0received a\u00a0scholarship,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0important for me to ensure that everybody recognizes how impactful these really are. The connections I made with\u00a0professors and fellow students during my educational journey helped me\u00a0obtain\u00a0my current job at the Kennedy Space Center. That support and belief in me fueled the passion to dream\u00a0bigger and better\u00a0and, as UCF would say, ‘reach for the stars.’\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hearing that\u00a0Feild\u00a0was\u00a0once\u00a0in\u00a0a similar\u00a0position\u00a0to where\u00a0I\u00a0am in\u00a0now made me reflect\u00a0on her words.\u00a0It made me\u00a0sincerely\u00a0appreciate\u00a0being\u00a0a recipient of these scholarships.\u00a0Not only was this an honor, but also a reminder that there are people who believe in my goals and potential.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Feild\u00a0reflects\u00a0these feelings by saying, \u201cWhen\u00a0you achieve that scholarship, all your hard work and\u00a0stress\u00a0reminds\u00a0you that somebody believed in you and your story. Scholarships are more than financial aid; they are investments for these students. They open doors to students who dream big but may not have the means to pursue those dreams. Scholarships give students the chance to focus on learning, growing, and contributing to their communities. Scholarships\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0just support education, they support leadership,\u00a0innovation\u00a0and\u00a0change.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n

A couple of\u00a0student scholarship recipients also had the opportunity to speak about their experiences.\u00a0Senior double majoring in Communication\u00a0and Political\u00a0Science, Linh V\u00f5,\u00a0who was awarded the Florida Public Relations\u00a0Association\u00a0Dr. Bob Davis Endowed Scholarship\u00a0as a member of the\u00a0Orlando Area Chapter,\u00a0opened up\u00a0about her story starting with her move from Vietnam to the U.S.\u00a0She explained\u00a0that her first year was at another\u00a0university,\u00a0but it\u00a0wasn\u2019t until she\u00a0transferred\u00a0to UCF that she felt like she was home.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u00a0felt\u00a0lost, but then I found\u00a0the\u00a0Communication\u00a0bachelor\u2019s\u00a0degree from UCF\u00a0at the Nicholson School of Communication and Media,\u201d says Vo. \u201cCombined with discussions with my family,\u00a0this\u00a0helped me make the best decision\u00a0I’ve\u00a0ever made.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next, Camille Fuson,\u00a0a\u00a0junior\u00a0studying biology,\u00a0spoke\u00a0about her\u00a0deep passion\u00a0and curiosity\u00a0for\u00a0wildlife\u00a0that began\u00a0in her childhood backyard.\u00a0While telling her story about why receiving a scholarship was critical in her experience,\u00a0Fuson explained that\u00a0her\u00a0scholarship\u00a0alleviated\u00a0her monetary\u00a0stress this year\u00a0as a result of\u00a0hurricanes\u00a0Helene and Milton.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn the fall of 2024, my\u00a0world\u00a0turned upside down (again).\u00a0Hurricanes\u00a0Helene and Milton destroyed my home\u00a0twice within\u00a010 days.\u00a0Everything I had ever known and called home was gone,\u201d\u00a0says Fuson.\u00a0\u201cThe storm\u00a0surge had ripped\u00a0apart\u00a0my childhood bedroom, leaving nothing more than what I could fit in one storage tote bin.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n

However, there was a light at the end of the tunnel in Fuson\u2019s\u00a0journey because\u00a0the Professor\u00a0I. Jack Stout Undergraduate Scholarship in Natural History\u00a0gave\u00a0her\u00a0the opportunity\u00a0to continue her education.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0giving\u00a0me financial support when I had to put my college savings into rebuilding\u00a0my\u00a0home,\u201d says Fuson.\u00a0\u201cThis scholarship allows me to focus on my classes without having to spend my free time working to try and cover textbooks or lab attire.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As I take the last few photos of the night\u00a0and make my final rounds around everyone\u00a0celebrating at\u00a0their tables, I have truly seen the impact of our\u00a0College of Sciences\u00a0community.\u00a0From seeing my colleagues planning the event to the final detail\u00a0to seeing the dinner come together seamlessly\u00a0with\u00a0all\u00a0the donors, faculty, and students in attendance, it has truly been one for the books.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The message that echoed throughout the room was that generosity changes lives. The scholarship dinner was more than a\u00a0celebration;\u00a0it was a powerful reminder\u00a0of what is possible when a community believes in the potential of its students. The gratitude expressed by students was matched\u00a0by the pride felt by donors, creating a shared sense of purpose that will continue to ripple far beyond the event.\u00a0In moments like these, the true spirit of UCF shines; one built on compassion,\u00a0opportunity\u00a0and an unwavering commitment to helping one another rise.\u00a0As we all say in unison for the last time that night,\u00a0\u201cGo\u00a0Knights,\u00a0Charge\u00a0On!\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
