Whether on\u00a0the\u00a0campus\u00a0of\u00a0America\u2019s Space University<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0at\u00a0one of the oldest active astronomical observatories in the world,\u00a0scientific discovery is shaped both by\u00a0new ideas\u00a0and the people who pursue them.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UCF students,\u00a0faculty\u00a0and researchers had an opportunity to learn from\u00a0a Vatican Observatory astronomer,\u00a0Br. Guy J. Consolmagno, S.J., on his recent visit to Orlando.\u00a0Drawing on his work as a researcher and\u00a0president\u00a0of the Vatican Observatory Foundation,\u00a0Consolmagno\u00a0connected lessons from the past with the realities of modern science, highlighting the enduring nature of human curiosity about the cosmos.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe look at the\u00a0sky\u00a0and we wonder where we fit,\u201d he says. \u201cThat question belongs to everyone.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Special Guest Lecturer\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

During his visit to\u00a0an\u00a0Introduction to Astronomy<\/em><\/a>\u00a0class, Consolmagno spoke with students about the life and work of\u00a0Italian astronomer\u00a0Galileo\u00a0Galilei, focusing on the historical context of his discoveries and the\u00a0challenges scientists faced during that time. He explained how Galileo\u2019s observations of the night sky, including the motion of planets and the phases of Venus, helped change the way people understood the universe.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout the\u00a0lecture, Consolmagno emphasized that the history of science is a gradual process shaped by curiosity, new\u00a0tools\u00a0and the willingness to keep asking questions.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cScience doesn\u2019t move\u00a0forward\u00a0all at once,\u201d he says. \u201cIt moves step by step, as people learn to see things in new ways.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also discussed how Galileo\u2019s work showed the importance of observation and careful measurement, explaining that early telescopes allowed scientists to gather evidence that had never been possible before.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOnce you can observe something for yourself, the conversation changes,\u201d he says. \u201cYou\u2019re no longer arguing about ideas \u2014 you\u2019re looking at what\u2019s actually there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From MIT to the Vatican Observatory<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In his afternoon talk,\u00a0Consolmagno\u00a0also shared some of his backstory that led to his career in space, relatable to many students at UCF \u2013 the No. 1 supplier of talent to the nation\u2019s\u00a0aerospace and defense industries.\u00a0His interest in astronomy began early, inspired by the space\u00a0race\u00a0and the first satellites launched into orbit. By the time he reached college, he was certain he wanted to study the universe, eventually earning advanced degrees in planetary\u00a0science\u00a0and building a career in research and teaching.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But his path was not a straight one.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At one point, unsure about his future in academia, he joined the Peace Corps and moved to Kenya, where he taught science and rediscovered his love for astronomy while sharing the night sky with students.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking up at the familiar constellations from the equator changed his perspective.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf I can see the stars I know I\u2019m not away from home,\u201d he says.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He joined\u00a0the Vatican Observatory\u00a0in 1993, where he\u00a0has\u00a0spent decades studying meteorites, asteroids and planetary materials while working within a religious community dedicated to scientific research.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Founded in the 16th century and formally\u00a0established\u00a0in its modern form in 1891, the observatory was created to show that the Catholic Church supports scientific discovery. Today, its researchers\u00a0\u2014\u00a0including\u00a0UCF physics alum\u00a0Brother Robert Macke \u201910PhD<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0\u2014\u00a0work on projects ranging from telescope development to planetary science.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe church founded the observatory to show that faith and science are not enemies,\u201d he says. \u201cWe\u2019re\u00a0not here to prove God with a telescope.\u00a0We\u2019re\u00a0here to understand the universe as honestly as we can.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His research has taken him to observatories in Arizona, laboratories around the world and even Antarctica, where he joined expeditions searching for meteorites under extreme conditions and in some of the most remote places on Earth.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those experiences, he says, reinforced the idea that science is not only about knowledge, but about\u00a0the human\u00a0desire to explore.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wonder, Curiosity and the Human Connection<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Throughout the lecture, Consolmagno returned to the idea that both science and faith begin with the same impulse \u2014 curiosity about the universe and our place in it.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the end, his message to students was simple: follow your curiosity, take\u00a0chances\u00a0and\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0be afraid of unexpected paths.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
