Guy J. Consolmagno, S.J., on his recent visit to Orlando.\u00a0Drawing on his work as a researcher and\u00a0president\u00a0of the Vatican Observatory Foundation,\u00a0Consolmagno\u00a0connected lessons from the past with the realities of modern science, highlighting the enduring nature of human curiosity about the cosmos.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe look at the\u00a0sky\u00a0and we wonder where we fit,\u201d he says. \u201cThat question belongs to everyone.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Special Guest Lecturer\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>During his visit to\u00a0an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/physics\/introductory-astronomy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Introduction to Astronomy<\/em><\/a>\u00a0class, Consolmagno spoke with students about the life and work of\u00a0Italian astronomer\u00a0Galileo\u00a0Galilei, focusing on the historical context of his discoveries and the\u00a0challenges scientists faced during that time. Consolmagno, S.J. presenting his lecture on the life of Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei in Introduction to Astronomy.<\/em>\u00a0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>From MIT to the Vatican Observatory<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In his afternoon talk,\u00a0Consolmagno\u00a0also shared some of his backstory that led to his career in space, relatable to many students at UCF \u2013 the No. 1 supplier of talent to the nation\u2019s\u00a0aerospace and defense industries.\u00a0His interest in astronomy began early, inspired by the space\u00a0race\u00a0and the first satellites launched into orbit. By the time he reached college, he was certain he wanted to study the universe, eventually earning advanced degrees in planetary\u00a0science\u00a0and building a career in research and teaching.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But his path was not a straight one.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At one point, unsure about his future in academia, he joined the Peace Corps and moved to Kenya, where he taught science and rediscovered his love for astronomy while sharing the night sky with students.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking up at the familiar constellations from the equator changed his perspective.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf I can see the stars I know I\u2019m not away from home,\u201d he says.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/03\/DSC04143-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"An older man with gray hair and a beard stands at a podium, speaking into a microphone. Hitt Library.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>He joined\u00a0the Vatican Observatory\u00a0in 1993, where he\u00a0has\u00a0spent decades studying meteorites, asteroids and planetary materials while working within a religious community dedicated to scientific research.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Founded in the 16th century and formally\u00a0established\u00a0in its modern form in 1891, the observatory was created to show that the Catholic Church supports scientific discovery.
