Students in the\u00a0Nicholson School of Communication and Media (NSCM)\u00a0film program gained\u00a0an inside look at the realities of filmmaking with Tatjana\u00a0Krstevski,\u00a0head of the\u00a0Department\u00a0of Cinematography\u00a0at\u00a0New York\u00a0University\u2019s (NYU)\u00a0Tisch School of the Arts Graduate Studies.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Invited by visiting\u00a0NSCM\u00a0film instructor Dragan\u00a0Vildovic, a longtime friend and fellow filmmaker,\u00a0Krstevski\u00a0met with students for a master class to share both technical insight and hard-earned lessons from her journey behind the camera. Her visit was a full-day event that included a screening of\u202fAsleep in My Palm<\/em>, for which she served as cinematographer, as well as a master lecture on color in cinematography.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the\u00a0beginning, she emphasized\u00a0that filmmaking is not about mastering a single\u00a0role, but\u00a0understanding how every piece comes together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat I love is that it\u2019s called filmmaking,\u201d\u00a0Krstevski\u00a0says. \u201cStudents get a chance to explore all the different disciplines.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0teamwork.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0merging all these beautiful art forms.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Building on that theme,\u00a0Krstevski\u00a0took the time to have each student introduce themselves while sharing their major and career interests. She followed\u00a0met with each student\u00a0individually,\u00a0offering\u00a0advice and encouraging them to explore other aspects of the arts to strengthen\u00a0their creativity.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Krstevski\u2019s\u00a0own path reflects that philosophy. She\u00a0began\u00a0in visual arts\u00a0by studying\u00a0drawing,\u00a0painting\u00a0and graphic design before discovering cinematography\u00a0as a way to\u00a0translate that visual instinct into film. Growing up in Serbia during a time shaped by war, she says those experiences influence both her perspective and her work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was always the girl with the camera,\u201d she says. \u201cI wasn\u2019t aware that\u00a0I was\u00a0already doing it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After studying\u00a0at the\u00a0University of Belgrade\u00a0with\u00a0Vildovic,\u00a0Krstevski\u00a0built\u00a0her career by working in camera departments and shooting as many projects as\u00a0possible,\u00a0often\u00a0saying yes to every opportunity that come\u00a0her way.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u00a0worked on every\u00a0shoot\u00a0that came to me,\u201d she says. \u201cEvery time somebody calls, you\u00a0say yes.\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0how you build\u00a0experience.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That mindset\u00a0is\u00a0one of her central messages to students: experience comes from doing, not waiting.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFail\u2014and you\u2019re failing\u00a0by doing,\u201d\u00a0Krstevski\u00a0says. \u201cYou need to do as much as possible so you can learn from it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also stressed\u00a0that film school itself is a unique\u00a0yet\u00a0limited window\u00a0that\u00a0students should take full advantage of.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis time will never repeat,\u201d she says. \u201cThe whole point is to collaborate with as many people as possible. The people you work with now are the same people\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0going to continue working with\u00a0in your career.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout the session,\u00a0Krstevski\u00a0returned\u00a0to the importance of collaboration, describing it as the foundation of filmmaking. She encouraged\u00a0students to build relationships, contribute to each other\u2019s\u00a0projects\u00a0and develop strong\u00a0collaborative\u00a0habits early.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond collaboration,\u00a0Krstevski\u00a0challenged\u00a0students to rethink how creativity works. Rather than seeing limitations as obstacles, she frames them as essential tools.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe more you limit yourself, the better the product will be,\u201d she says. \u201cThere is some paradox about it, but it\u2019s true.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drawing from her own experience shooting a feature film in just\u00a015 days\u00a0with a limited budget, she explains how constraints shape every creative decision,\u00a0from camera choice to lighting approach.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAll the creative\u00a0elements\u00a0come\u00a0from the limitation,\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Krstevski\u00a0also emphasized\u00a0adaptability as a critical skill. Whether\u00a0adjusting to\u00a0unexpected conditions on set or navigating changes in post-production, she describes filmmaking as a constant process of responding in real time.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou have to prepare yourself so nothing can surprise you,\u201d she says. \u201cBut at the same time, know it will change\u00a0and be okay with that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She\u00a0compared\u00a0the process to movement and rhythm, a recurring theme throughout her talk.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou have to learn how to dance,\u201d she says.\u00a0\u201cThings will not go your way. You need to adapt.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her technical advice reinforces that philosophy. From using minimal lighting setups to embracing natural sources\u00a0such\u00a0as\u00a0the sun,\u00a0Krstevski\u00a0encourages students to focus on fundamentals rather than relying on expensive equipment.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou\u00a0don\u2019t need a lot to achieve great things,\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also urges students to experiment\u2014whether through documentary work, camera\u00a0movement\u00a0or visual style\u2014highlighting how hands-on practice sharpens instincts and builds confidence.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShoot as much as you can,\u201d she says. \u201cThat\u2019s how you craft your skills.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the end of the master class,\u00a0Krstevski\u00a0left\u00a0students with a clear takeaway: filmmaking is not just about technical mastery, but about mindset\u2014one rooted in curiosity,\u00a0resilience\u00a0and collaboration.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
