Dr. Costas Efthimiou, UCF Physics professor, is the guest speaker at the September 5 Science Cafe, which will be held at Taste Restaurant in College Park. The Science Cafes start at 7 p.m. and are free and open to the public.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

Efthimiou\u00a0will explain the basic ideas that have led to our\u00a0desire and hope that a unique theory describing everything in our\u00a0universe can be found. He’ll will review the current state of affairs\u00a0(including the latest discovery announced by CERN on July 4, 2012) and\u00a0present a proposed theory for which the majority of the experts\u00a0consider so far as the only viable candidate for being the Theory of\u00a0Everything.<\/p>\n

Costas Efthimiou obtained his BSc from the University of Athens and his\u00a0PhD from Cornell University. After this, he spent an additional year at\u00a0Cornell as a Lecturer teaching physics courses. He then accepted a\u00a0research associate position at Tel Aviv University where he stayed for\u00a0two years. He returned to the U.S. as a Visiting Scientist at the Math\u00a0Department of Harvard University. He continued with a Visiting\u00a0Scientist appointment at Cornell and Columbia Universities. In August\u00a02000, he joined the Physics Department of UCF. Costas Efthimiou’s\u00a0background is mathematical physics and theoretical high energy physics\u00a0but he has also been involved in physics education and the promotion of\u00a0science literacy and quantitative fluency.<\/p>\n

Taste is near the corner of Princeton Street (really Smith Street after
\nthe fork) and Edgewater Drive, so about 2 minutes from I-4 to parking.
\nOne can park on the street or in the parking lot behind Taste.
\n* From Downtown and south, drive north (“east”) on I-4 through
\ndowntown. At the exit for Princeton Street, exit and turn
\nleft\/west.
\n* From Altamonte Springs and north, drive south (“west”) on I-4
\ntoward downtown Orlando. At the exit for Princeton Street, exit and
\nturn right\/west.<\/p>\n

From I-4, drive a few blocks to Edgewater Drive. At the intersection,
\nyou should see a orange building ahead of you, labeled “Taste”. Park on
\nthe street or behind Taste.<\/p>\n

Cafe Scientifiques\u00a0\"\"<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

The\u00a0Cafe Scientifiques are sponsored by the Florida Academy of Scienes. The Academy partners with the College of Sciences in increasing the public’s understanding of science though such programs as the Ask-A-Scientist program, which is run in conjunction with the Orlando Science Center.
