{"id":4973,"date":"2012-11-12T11:19:30","date_gmt":"2012-11-12T16:19:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.cos.ucf.edu\/?p=4973"},"modified":"2012-11-12T11:19:30","modified_gmt":"2012-11-12T16:19:30","slug":"biology-student-wins-award-for-medicinal-plants-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/biology-student-wins-award-for-medicinal-plants-research\/","title":{"rendered":"Biology student wins award for medicinal plants research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A UCF College of Sciences undergraduate student,\u00a0Jessica Pirkey, recently traveled to the\u00a04th International Conference on Medicinal Plants &amp; Herbal Products during this weekend at Johns Hopkins University, Maryland.<\/p>\n<p>Pirkey, participated in the conference and presented her research, which won the\u00a0\u201cBest Student Poster Award.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her research, under the guidance of UCF Biology Instructor\u00a0Dr.Rani Vajravelu, focuses on\u00a0testing the antibacterial and antiviral effects of traditionally used medicinal plants of both India and North America.<\/p>\n<p>The aim of the Conference\u00a0 is to provide a platform for eminent researchers, academicians, physicians, traditional medical practitioners, manufacturers &amp; exporters of herbal products, representative of the corporate sector, marketing consultants and NGOs from all over the world.<\/p>\n<p>This conference is jointly organized by\u00a0 St. Laurent Institute (SLI) (Genoma Ayurveda) &amp; George Washington University, Washington DC in collaboration with S.V. University, Tirupati, India, University of Colombo, Sri Lanka and GDP Ayurvedic University (GDPAU), New Brunswick, New Jersey, USA, International Council for Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (ICMAP), American Academy of Ayurvedic Medicine, Inc.
