Chandler, the director of the Nicholson School of Communication.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As most of you already know, the programs of the Nicholson School of Communication (NSC) are undergoing a State of Florida mandated review this academic year. A period of self-study and analysis has been underway for the past six months and a large amount of data is being reported to UCF academic affairs this fall semester. Among the data we are required to report are the results of various SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) analyses conducted by key constituent groups.<\/p>\n<p>The SWOT exercise is an assessment and pre-strategic planning method widely used in business and other contexts. Essentially, identified strengths and weaknesses are aspects intrinsic (internal aspects) to the unit under analysis (e.g. school, program area, etc.). Opportunities and threats are aspects extrinsic (external) to the unit under analysis. SWOT input has been collected from NSC faculty in each program area for each program (including the graduate program), students and alumni and from NSC Board of Visitors members.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a short select summary of some of the more frequently mentioned points which have been generated thus far in various sessions:<\/p>\n<p>Strengths<br \/>\nFaculty<br \/>\nAlumni<br \/>\nStudents \u2013 talented\/well prepared<br \/>\nStudents \u2013 Limited access programs high admission standards<br \/>\nAdministrative leadership<br \/>\nLocation<br \/>\nHigh standards<br \/>\nGlobal studies opportunities<br \/>\nGrowth in research<br \/>\nPopular majors\/programs<br \/>\nInternships<\/p>\n<p>Weaknesses<br \/>\nMass communication programs do not reflect real world converged media<br \/>\nLack of national profile<br \/>\nLack of recognition<br \/>\nLack of research in local community on communication issues<br \/>\nLack support of local media\/community<br \/>\nInsufficient alumni engagement, financial support, infusion of alumni perspective, experience<br \/>\nLack of business instruction<br \/>\nLack of digital\/new media courses\/training<br \/>\nLack of student access to emerging technology<br \/>\nHigh teaching loads for research faculty<br \/>\nInsufficient numbers of teaching faculty<br \/>\nInsufficient resources<br \/>\nInsufficient space (including classrooms, offices, available facilities)<br \/>\nOpportunities<br \/>\nRelationship with other UCF colleges (e.g. Business, Medicine, etc.)<br \/>\nDisasters and crises (manmade\/natural)<br \/>\nProducing students proficient in converged media \u2013 workforce opportunities<br \/>\nPBS provides real world opportunities for TV broadcast<br \/>\nPartnerships with business community<br \/>\nExpand and develop global studies program<br \/>\nCrisis communication<br \/>\nLeveraging alumni base for scholarships, etc.<br \/>\nRaise profile with converged media program<br \/>\nIndustry\u2019s accelerated change provides opportunity for NSC to lead<br \/>\nPartnerships &amp; mergers<br \/>\nInternational programs &amp; study abroad<br \/>\nProfessional certificate programs<br \/>\nMarketing<br \/>\nRole for alumni<br \/>\nThreats<br \/>\nLack of student ethics<br \/>\nEconomy, state funding<br \/>\nFear of change by faculty<br \/>\nInsufficient external funding for research<br \/>\nLack state and private funding \u2013 budget cuts, hiring freeze, &amp; economy<br \/>\nCompetition among other top university comm. programs<br \/>\nStudents lack of awareness of current\/world events<br \/>\nCompetition \u2013 other programs UF\/UM\/Full Sail<br \/>\nKeeping up with changing technology<br \/>\nProgram and resource relevance in a fast pace environment<br \/>\nIncreased research expectations<br \/>\nState emphasis and funding of STEM programs<br \/>\nManaged growth in numbers of students<br \/>\nThese are all useful and reflect various perspectives. These are generative insights which may be useful as we think about advancing NSC. It is also important to note that these did not emerge as \u201cconsensus\u201d points \u2013 and in some cases some of these are in \u201ctension\u201d with other points. Disagreements are not a bad thing \u2013 as long as we continue to learn and gain insight from various perspectives \u2013 which remains our primary goal in this process.<\/p>\n<p>We are always looking for feedback and I\u2019d like to invite your input for the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats facing the school at this point in our history. As you think about NSC from your own perspective there are a handful of useful questions which might be helpful for you to contemplate. These include:<\/p>\n<p>How could the school\/program address identified weaknesses?<br \/>\nHow could the school\/program leverage identified strengths?<br \/>\nHow could the school\/program avoid or minimize identified threats?<br \/>\nHow could the school\/program take advantage of identified opportunities?<br \/>\nWhat aspects identified are most important to you?<br \/>\nWhat recommendations for future efforts would you make?<br \/>\nHow best can talk about these issues be turned into specific plans for action?<br \/>\nLet me (robert.chandler@ucf.edu) know what you think.
