Dr. Walters decided on the live animals\/plants touch tank station, but her volunteers came up with the other stations. These included a shark song station where students could sing and dance; matching habitats to animals board game station; skeleton station, which showed the skulls of a sea lion, dolphin, killer whale, and sea turtle; and a hand print station.<\/p>\n<p>The hand print station is where the children got to learn about the \u201cFriend of the Earth\u201d pledge. The purpose of the pledge is to get children to promise not to release their animals into the ocean. When students were asked what they do with their animals when they no longer want them, many said \u201cI put my pet in the ocean.\u201d It&#8217;s important for animals not to be\u00a0released in the ocean because\u00a0they\u00a0can become invasive and can change the structure and function of marine ecosystems, which can be disruptive to the food chain.<\/p>\n<p>Located at the station was a piece of paper that the students got to trace their hand on and create their own ocean creature. They were asked to write their name on the bottom of the paper as their signature for<a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2013\/03\/P1010105.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6863 alignright\" alt=\"P1010105\" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2013\/03\/P1010105-300x225.jpg\" width=\"210\" height=\"158\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2013\/03\/P1010105-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2013\/03\/P1010105-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2013\/03\/P1010105-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2013\/03\/P1010105-299x224.jpg 299w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2013\/03\/P1010105.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 210px) 100vw, 210px\" \/><\/a> the pledge.<\/p>\n<p>To help with Ocean Day, Dr. Walters brought 12 female volunteers with her out of the 100 she has to choose from. \u201cIt\u2019s nice to give back to the community and return the favor,\u201d says Samantha Yuan, a master\u2019s student majoring in biology. \u201cIt\u2019s fun to see the kids\u2019 faces and the how much excitement they have about the activities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When asked how days like Ocean Day can help children, Noemi Rebeli, biology major, said \u201cIt helps make the children more aware about keeping the ocean clean. Seeing the creatures makes it real for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2013\/03\/P1010115.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6864 alignleft\" alt=\"P1010115\" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2013\/03\/P1010115-300x225.jpg\" width=\"168\" height=\"126\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2013\/03\/P1010115-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2013\/03\/P1010115-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2013\/03\/P1010115-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2013\/03\/P1010115-299x224.jpg 299w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2013\/03\/P1010115.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 168px) 100vw, 168px\" \/><\/a>\u201cIt peaks their interest,\u201d says Donna Campbell, a master\u2019s student majoring in biology. \u201cIt\u2019s awesome because most children don\u2019t think about the creatures in the ocean while they\u2019re at the beach. Seeing those creatures here and learning about them will make them more interested.<\/p>\n<p>The Creative School\u2019s goal is to get faculty from all science departments to come to their school for events like Ocean Day.
