{"id":9089,"date":"2014-02-21T12:57:59","date_gmt":"2014-02-21T17:57:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.cos.ucf.edu\/?p=9089"},"modified":"2024-08-16T09:42:09","modified_gmt":"2024-08-16T13:42:09","slug":"a-time-for-new-traditions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/a-time-for-new-traditions\/","title":{"rendered":"A Time for New Traditions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2014\/02\/i-ztR3ZtZ-X3-e1393005104235.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9194 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2014\/02\/i-ztR3ZtZ-X3-e1393005104235.jpg\" alt=\"i-ztR3ZtZ-X3\" width=\"275\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The College of Sciences recently started a new tradition, as it held its inaugural Scholarship Luncheon in February to honor University of Central Florida 2013-14 donors and the college&#8217;s scholarship recipients\u00a0at the UCF FAIRWINDS Alumni Center.\u00a0 The event was created to acknowledge the achievements of the college&#8217;s most accomplished students and recognize the continued support of the college&#8217;s donors that provide well needed scholarship funds.<\/p>\n<p>Attending this event were nearly 50 scholarship donors, student scholarship recipients, faculty and staff.\u00a0 In 2013-14 there were approximately 625 scholarship applicants.\u00a0 Out of these applicants, 36 awards were given to 33 students.\u00a0 This\u00a0amounted to about $56k in financial assistance that was provided to the college\u2019s well deserving students through these scholarships!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2014\/02\/i-4mVgFMM-X3-e1393004865954.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-9191 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2014\/02\/i-4mVgFMM-X3-e1393004865954.jpg\" alt=\"i-4mVgFMM-X3\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2014\/02\/i-4mVgFMM-X3-e1393004865954.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2014\/02\/i-4mVgFMM-X3-e1393004865954-299x199.jpg 299w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The event began with networking time as all the guests arrived.\u00a0\u00a0The scholarship recipients were then seated at tables with the donors for their particular scholarship so they could get to know one another.\u00a0 Ray Allen, Director of Development, welcomed everyone to the event and the meal was served.\u00a0 After the meal, College of Sciences Dean, Michael Johnson, spoke\u00a0about the college\u2019s programs and some of the achievements from the past year.\u00a0 Associate Dean and past Chair for the College of Sciences&#8217; Scholarship Committee, Teresa Dorman, was introduced to recognize the scholarship donors and recipients.\u00a0 She spoke about her past experiences on the scholarship committee and about the new, easier application process for College of Sciences&#8217; Scholarships, which is fully automated on the COS Scholarships website.\u00a0 She then recognized each donor and recipient and they were welcomed to the stage area to pose for a photo with Dean Johnson.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2014\/02\/i-zBHfQTd-X3-e1393005266541.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-9196 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2014\/02\/i-zBHfQTd-X3-e1393005266541.jpg\" alt=\"i-zBHfQTd-X3\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2014\/02\/i-zBHfQTd-X3-e1393005266541.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2014\/02\/i-zBHfQTd-X3-e1393005266541-299x199.jpg 299w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At the end of the presentation, a special spotlight highlighted the Frank R.
