{"id":9200,"date":"2014-02-24T11:48:36","date_gmt":"2014-02-24T16:48:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.cos.ucf.edu\/?p=9200"},"modified":"2014-02-24T11:48:36","modified_gmt":"2014-02-24T16:48:36","slug":"mysteries-of-the-mind","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/mysteries-of-the-mind\/","title":{"rendered":"Mysteries of the Mind"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2014\/02\/Jeffrey-Bedwell-resized.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-9205\" alt=\"Jeffrey Bedwell resized\" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2014\/02\/Jeffrey-Bedwell-resized.jpg\" width=\"140\" height=\"196\" \/><\/a>If you\u2019ve ever been presented the opportunity to catch a viewing of the film, \u2018A Beautiful Mind\u2019, it escapes your reasoning the\u00a0lead character\u00a0is dealing with schizophrenia. \u00a0As landmark events begin to unfold, you piece together each clue noticed until the unforeseen realization occurs, \u201cIt was all of his own creation!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Schizophrenia has a way of surprising researchers in that same aspect; It is difficult to analyze specific pieces of information regarding the disorder without being directed in a new path as previously trekked. \u00a0As new findings on this disorder are uncovered, scientists become more equipped with the knowledge to solve the mystery that is schizophrenia.<\/p>\n<p>Psychology professor Dr. Jeffrey Bedwell sees this disorder as a force to be reckoned with as he and his research group begin research to understand the underlying brain abnormalities and causes of schizophrenia.\u00a0 This research is made possible by a generous research grant through the National Institutes of Health (NIH).\u00a0 The NIH is funding\u00a026 research projects at the University of Central Florida with a grant totaling $7.2 million.<\/p>\n<p>Although this disorder is believed to act as an umbrella term to house a range of disorders, Dr. Bedwell looks to focus on its link to early visual processing abnormalities.
