Brian Smith is the Acting Deputy Associate Administrator for Management with the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). The NNSA is a semi-autonomous agency within the U.S. Department of Energy responsible for enhancing national security through the military application of nuclear science. Mr. Smith oversees the Offices of Human Resources, Business Services, Employee Empowerment, Learning and Career Management, and International Operations, providing top notch human capital programs to 2,500 federal personnel around the world.
Mr. Smith previously served in the Office of Naval Reactors, a joint Department of Energy / Department of the Navy program responsible for all aspects of naval nuclear propulsion. As Naval Reactors’ Director of Management and Administration, he oversaw human capital programs for a total federal workforce of 800 civilian and military personnel within the Department of Energy and Department of the Navy, as well as industrial relations with the prime contractor that operates the program’s nuclear laboratories. He also served as Naval Reactors’ Director of Finance and Budget, in which he was responsible for the formulation and justification of the program’s annual Department of Energy and Department of the Navy Congressional budget justifications in excess of $3 billion. During his tenure, Mr. Smith participated in multiple interagency reviews to scope and execute the modernization of the nation’s nuclear deterrent capabilities.
A member of the Senior Executive Service, Mr. Smith served on active duty as a Navy Supply Corps officer and maintains his uniformed service as a drilling Navy reservist. He holds a B.A. from the University of Central Florida, an M.S. from the George Washington University, and is a certified Senior Professional in Human Resources.
