Brian Smith is a Professional Staff Member with the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Appropriations, Energy and Water Development Subcommittee. His portfolio includes the nation’s nuclear weapons complex, as well as defense and non-defense environmental cleanup.
In previous Executive Branch assignments, Mr. Smith was a member of the career Senior Executive Service. He served as the Director, Office of Acquisition Management and Head of the Contracting Activity for the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). NNSA is a semi-autonomous agency within the U.S. Department of Energy responsible for enhancing national security through the military application of nuclear science. Mr. Smith also acted as NNSA’s Deputy Associate Administrator for Management, in which he oversaw a variety of key business functions critical to meeting the NNSA mission. Mr. Smith also held executive leadership roles in human capital and financial management with Naval Reactors, a joint Department of Energy / Department of the Navy program responsible for all aspects of naval nuclear propulsion. During his tenure, Mr. Smith participated in multiple interagency reviews to scope and execute the modernization of the nation’s nuclear deterrent.
Mr. Smith served on active duty as an officer in the U.S. Navy and maintains his uniformed service as a drilling Navy reservist. He holds a B.A. from the University of Central Florida, an M.S. from the George Washington University, and certifications in Contracting, Human Resources, and Project Management.
