He is also part of the UCF National Center for Integrated Coastal Research. He received his PhD in geological sciences at the University of Southern California and has served as a Smithsonian fellow and a postdoctoral fellow at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. He has been a faculty member at Oklahoma State University and Florida State University, and a research associate at the Florida Geological Survey, and visiting scientist at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands.
