{"id":2810,"date":"2021-08-27T17:17:42","date_gmt":"2021-08-27T21:17:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/pmbfprogram\/?page_id=2810"},"modified":"2021-09-07T11:22:14","modified_gmt":"2021-09-07T15:22:14","slug":"water-middle-east","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/pmbfprogram\/water-middle-east\/","title":{"rendered":"Water in the Middle East"},"content":{"rendered":"\t\t\t<div class=\"jumbotron jumbotron-fluid bg-primary mb-0\"\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"container\"\n\t\t\t\t\t\t>\n\t\t\t\t\n<p class=\"lead\">The Middle East faces increasing environmental and resource\u2010 based challenges, such as depleting water resources and food security.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"jumbotron jumbotron-fluid mb-0 pt-5 pb-5 bg-secondary\"\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"container\"\n\t\t\t\t\t\t>\n\t\t\t\t\n<h3 class=\"heading-underline\">Innovation and Investment in MENA Region Food Security<\/h3>\n<p>How will the Middle East and North Africa region meet the growing demand for food? What are the implications of the current political environment in the region on food security? What type of planning is needed and how can better policies be implemented? To answer these pertinent questions, the Hollings Center for International Dialogue, together with the University of Central Florida and Al Akhwayan University in Morocco, recently hosted a dialogue called\u00a0The Food Security Factor: Stability, Governance, and Development Choices.\u00a0\u00a0The dialogue looked at food security throughout the MENA region as part of a series of dialogues that look at resource challenges throughout the Middle East. \u00a0Following this meeting, we conducted several video interviews on some of the topics of the dialogue. Links to these videos can be found below.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<div class=\"row mt-5\"\n\t\t\t\t\t\t>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\" col-12 col-lg-6\"\n\t\t\t\t\t\t>\n\t\t\t\t\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Ismahane Elouafi on Innovation and Investment in MENA Region Food Security\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/240542913?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ismahane Elouaf<\/strong>i, Director General of the International Center for Biosaline Agriculture, discusses the innovation solutions that could be applied to improving food security in the Middle East &amp; North Africa. She focuses on deploying small scale technological innovations, the importance of learning from older techniques, and the utilization of local, native crop varieties.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\" col-12 col-lg-6\"\n\t\t\t\t\t\t>\n\t\t\t\t\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Martin Keulertz on Food Security in the Middle East &amp; North Africa\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/240539663?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Martin Keulertz<\/strong>, Assistant Professor at the American University of Beirut, discusses the challenges the MENA region faces in achieving food security and discusses possible ways to address those challenges. Most importantly, the outlook can be optimistic with attention to key issues and the development of new strategies.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\" col-12 col-lg-6\"\n\t\t\t\t\t\t>\n\t\t\t\t\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Jeannie Sowers on Food Security Challenges and Practices in the MENA Region\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/240542191?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Jeannie Sowers<\/strong>, Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of New Hampshire, discusses some of the obstacles to food security in the Middle East &amp; North Africa, particularly the challenge of the inclusion of rural populations in food security strategies. She further highlights good examples from the region.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\" col-12 col-lg-6\"\n\t\t\t\t\t\t>\n\t\t\t\t\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dr. Hassan Arafat on Desalination in the Middle East\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/101554693?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr. Hassan Arafat<\/strong> of the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology discusses the state of desalination in the Middle East, including problems of using this technology and recent developments in the field of desalination.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\" col-12 col-lg-6\"\n\t\t\t\t\t\t>\n\t\t\t\t\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Interview on Middle East Water Issues with Dr. Scott Moore\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/101550519?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr. Scott Moore<\/strong> discusses why water is such a political issue and what conditions are necessary to resolving water conflict in the Middle East.
