How to get in?
- GRE (really important/selective schools)
- GPA (different standards for different universities)
- Coursework (importance fluctuates)
- Undergraduate RA (need for Ph.D., differs for Masters)
- Letters of Rec (usually need 3/majority academic) look for people with the degree you are seeking!
- HIM Thesis
- Fieldwork
- Psychology clubs (Psi Chi/Psych Society)
- Undergraduate TA
- Peer Advisor
Should you go to graduate school?
- Are you self-motivated/interested in learning?
- Do you think a degree will help get a job?
- Do you care about making a lot of money?
What is graduate school like? Eat, Live & Breathe Psychology!
- No outside employment
- Multitasking
- Abstract goals
- Smaller classes
- Essay exams/ take-home
- Full-time
- Primary sources (journal articles)
Apply now or later?
- Can wait a year
- Postpone graduation (need research experience) Don’t be in a rush to graduate!
- Don’t wait too long…
Ph.D. = approx 5 years
Masters = approx 2 years
Where should I apply?
- Research interests?
- Reputation?
- How many to apply to? How selective?
- Can you go out-of-state?
Don’t apply anywhere you don’t want to go!
How to afford graduate school?
- Fellowships, TA, RA and tuition waivers
- Ph.D. usually get the most
Personal statement:
- Promote strengths but don’t overdo it
- Don’t get too personal!
- Get feedback/revise it
- Tailor it to specific schools if possible
What is a Psy.D.?
- Less emphasis on research than Ph.D.
- Sometimes seen as less prestigious than a Ph.D.
- Less financial aid (no research)
