Summer 2024: Lab Member Kevin Llanos recently had the opportunity to work closely with the Shawn Long Organizational Sciences Institution over the summer. As a SURF Fellow, he had the opportunity to continue working on his undergraduate honors thesis with the program’s support and resources. The purpose of his thesis is to analyze existing prescribed fire incident documentation and detailed narratives that outline the prevalent dangers faced by prescribed fire teams as they operate as a multi-team system. Kevin felt that preparing for the coding stage and going through all of the narratives during a two-week period was a rewarding research experience. His work culminated in a poster presentation at SURFs 2024 Summer Research Poster Showcase.
Kevin said his involvement in the fellowship was possible through continuous involvement in research, working closely with faculty members and taking initiative when the opportunity presents itself. He’s looking forward to making the best out of his final semester and completing his thesis.
