In addition to completing five advanced research methods courses, our <strong>doctoral students<\/strong> are engaged in research throughout their time at UCF. The UCF <a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/psychology\/graduate\/ph-d-io\/#io-faculty\"><strong>I\/O faculty<\/strong><\/a> are all active researchers, who provide each student with ample opportunity to collaborate on research projects beyond our program\u2019s formal theses and dissertation requirements. The I\/O program is especially known for its strengths in (a) <strong>occupational health psychology<\/strong> (e.g., work stress, the future of work, resilience), (b) <strong>groups and teams<\/strong>, and (c) <strong>research methods and statistics<\/strong>. The faculty regularly partner with <strong>private and government organizations<\/strong>, creating valuable hands-on research opportunities for our I\/O doctoral students.<\/p>\n<p>Our program uses a \u201clearning-by-doing\u201d philosophy: Our students learn research skills <strong>by doing research<\/strong>. These skills are critical to students\u2019 career success, regardless of whether they plan to use their I\/O research training in <strong>academic<\/strong> (e.g., university-based teaching and research) or <strong>applied<\/strong> (e.g., consulting, government, applied research) settings. Our students receive training in the main substantive areas of I\/O psychology, including work motivation, job attitudes, occupational stress, groups and teams, climate and culture, personnel selection, employee training, and performance appraisal. They also complete advanced coursework in research methods, statistics, and psychometrics.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n\t\t\t<div class=\"jumbotron jumbotron-fluid bg-inverse mb-0\"\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"container\"\n\t\t\t\t\t\t>\n\t\t\t\t\n<h2 class=\"heading-underline\">At a glance:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The I\/O doctoral program began in 2000 and has graduated 95 students (46% currently work in academic\/research positions, 54% currently work in applied positions)<\/li>\n<li>The program typically enrolls approximately 30 doctoral students. In the average year, we admit 4-6 new doctoral students.<\/li>\n<li>Five faculty affiliated with our program are fellows of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP): Bowling, Burke, Ehrhart, Jex, Shoss. The first three years are devoted to coursework and the completion of a master\u2019s thesis (if not completed previously), and the final years are focused on the completion of a doctoral dissertation. After completing all required coursework, students are required to pass a candidacy exam. Doctoral students are engaged in research throughout their time at UCF, and students regularly present at international conferences and publish in research journals.
