Her current and past research spans several areas in Sociology including medical sociology, science and technology studies, and consumption and food studies. She earned her doctoral degree from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Her methodological expertise is in ethnographic\/qualitative research. Some of her notable research accomplishments include completion of the first ethnographic exploration of the emergence of treatments for food allergy in North America, which was published in the\u00a0<i>Sociology of Health and Illness\u00a0<\/i>and\u00a0<i>Health: An interdisciplinary journal.<\/i>\u00a0She also led and completed a pan-Canadian study exploring how to improve opioid-related interventions for youth at risk of using opioids wherein she collaborated with experts in the fields of clinical psychology, psychiatry, sociology, and anthropology. This project culminated in publication of the first supplement to the\u00a0<i>Canadian Journal of Addiction.<\/i>\u00a0Her current research explores the emergence of \u201contologically ambiguous food drugs\u201d examining how and why new pharmaceutical foods are developed. Dr. Nairn\u2019s teaching interests include medical sociology and the sociology of science, technology, and knowledge.
