    Welcome Remarks<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

    Sun Tzu’s The Art of War <\/i>highlights the importance of collecting and analyzing information. Sun Tzu claimed that to succeed in war, a general should have full knowledge of his own strengths and weaknesses as well as full knowledge of the enemy’s strengths and weaknesses. Lack of either one might result in defeat.<\/span><\/p>\n

    In modern businesses, increasing standards, automation and technologies have led to vast amounts of data becoming available. Business intelligence has now become the art of sifting through that data, extracting pertinent information and turning that information into knowledge upon which actions can be taken. This allows a business to predict what their own strengths and weaknesses are as well as the strengths and weaknesses of the competition giving a business the knowledge to have a competitive edge. Soon, business information will become more democratized where end users from throughout an organization will be able to view information on their particular segment to see how it’s performing. In the future, the capability requirements of business intelligence will increase in the same way that consumer expectations increase. It is therefore imperative that companies increase at the same pace or even faster to stay competitive. The Data Mining Lab of University of Central Florida (UCF), SAS, and Everbank have come together to present this annual symposium on Big Data Business Intelligence. Here we bring together practioners from a variety of industries including health care and finance to share their experiences in applying emerging data mining techniques to solve challenging business problems. The Data Mining Program at UCF offers cutting edge training, a supportive educational environment and is complemented with ongoing industrial collaborations. Our graduate students serve internships with our eminent business partners providing them real-world experiences and offering in return enthusiasm and current developments in data mining. Our faculty enjoys stimulating consulting relationships which inspire research directions and provide curricular case studies to client assent. Industry leaders, IT professionals, database marketers and others seeking to discover recent developments in the emerging data mining technologies to advance their business intelligence are welcome to attend. This symposium will provide a forum for academia and industry leaders to share ideas, knowledge and experiences.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    \u00a0\"\"Michael Speed<\/b>, <\/b>Ph.D.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    F. Michael Speed Ph.D. is an Analytical Consultant at SAS. He retired from Texas A&M University in August 2012. His teaching and research interests are in applying statistics to real-world problems using SAS. As part of the Global Academic Program at SAS, Speed teaches classes for faculty and students and conducts research in linear models, generalized linear models, nonlinear mixed models, data mining and Visual Analytics.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Introduction to Visual Analytics<\/span><\/p>\n

    Abstract: No matter the size of your organization \u2013 or your data \u2013 with SAS Visual Analytics (VA) you can explore all relevant data quickly and easily. You can look at more options, uncover hidden opportunities, identify key relationships and make more precise decisions faster than ever before. Self-service, ad hoc visual data discovery and exploration put lightning-fast insights within everyone’s reach.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Quickly design reports that are attractive, interactive and meaningful. Then easily distribute them via the Web or mobile devices. You can even create reports that enable recipients to slice and dice the information however they need to, using filters and drill-through capabilities to further explore data on their own.<\/span><\/p>\n

    This talk will demonstrate the use of VA along with using a tablet to show results.<\/span><\/p>\n

    \u00a0\"\"David Vogel<\/b>: CEO, \u00a0Chief Scientist<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    David Vogel is the CEO and Chief Scientist of Voloridge Investment Management, a quantitative hedge fund based in Orlando.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Mr. Vogel is a predictive modeling scientist with degrees in Mathematics and Scientific Computing from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and New York University.\u00a0 He has developed predictive models from a wide variety of data sets with great success gaining international recognition for models ranging from medical applications to direct marketing.\u00a0 Attesting to the versatility of his modeling capabilities, Mr. Vogel is the three time winner and two time runner-up of the prestigious KDD Cup.\u00a0 More recently in 2013, he captained the team of predictive modelers that won the $500,000 Heritage Health Prize for their work in predicting health outcomes.\u00a0 Mr. Vogel has been invited to speak at conferences and research institutes worldwide.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    After several years identifying predictors in financial models, David Vogel founded Voloridge Investment Management in 2009 applying quantitative strategies to maximize returns while minimizing risk.\u00a0 He utilizes his extensive knowledge of predictive modeling to manage two investment programs, market neutral equities and global futures, totaling over $400 million in assets.<\/span><\/p>\n

    \"\"Donghui Wu, Ph.D., Chief Science Officer<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    Dr. Donghui Wu currently is the Chief Science Officer of Healthcare Group for LexisNexis Risk Solutions. He was for Elsevier Clinical Solutions\/MEDai. He leads and manages the research and development of innovative big data analytics products for both payer and provider analytics markets with integrated Claims data, clinical and public consumer records data. His team also supports science and analytics needs in sales, account management, product management and development. He has broad research experience in predictive modeling, machine learning, statistical learning, data mining, Web and text mining, data warehousing and business intelligence.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Dr. Wu is a senior member of IEEE, past Chair of IEEE Florida Council, past Chair of IEEE Orlando Section, recipient of IEEE Florida Council 2008 \u201cOutstanding Engineer Award\u201d. He is the conference general chair of IEEE SoutheastCon 2012, Orlando, March 15th -18th, Orlando, FL. He received both his Ph.D. and M.S. degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic\u00a0Institute, Troy, New York.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    \"\"\u00a0\u00a0Andrew T. Thoeni: VP<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    Drew Thoeni is VP, Business Intelligence at EverBank where he is responsible for building and running a state-of-the-art business intelligence and data sciences group.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Previously, Drew was president and CEO of Software Quality Engineering, Inc., a media and education firm serving IT professionals hosting the largest and most established conferences on testing and software development. Mr. Thoeni is also co-founder of Decile, LLC, an advanced analytics and data mining company serving the the healthcare industry.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    Mr. Thoeni has been the vice president of marketing and vice president of eCommerce at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida where he led a group of professionals using market intelligence, primary research, segmentation, and customer understanding to define market strategy and provide market-based guidance to the corporation. Additionally, Drew led the corporation\u2019s eCommerce efforts covering web-based content and all electronic interactions between members, physicians and providers, employers, sales partners, visitors and employees.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    Drew has more than 20 years experience in areas related to intellectual capital, knowledge management, data analysis, and building and using business information systems. His expertise also includes banking and finance, higher education, new venture creation, and technology and information systems. His technology experience covers various fields including mainframe computing, networking, client-server and web application design, management information systems, and data warehousing.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    Drew has worked as an independent consultant assisting start-up and \u201cstart-over\u201d companies in the areas business launch and strategic planning. He has also held positions in audit, acquisitions and conversions, and operations at one of the nation\u2019s 15 largest banks. He has executive work experience in higher and elementary education and is active in several community organizations. He is also a founder of the not-for-profit corporation, JaxWiz, the nation\u2019s first free community sponsored wireless Internet zone.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    Drew holds an MBA from University of North Florida and a dual bachelor\u2019s degree in cultural anthropology and journalism from the University of Florida, and is completing his doctorate in marketing at Kennesaw State University.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
