Wild Animal Research at UCF

Thank you for your interest in joining the UCF Purple Martin Project! Your participation will give you the opportunity to work with free-living purple martins nesting on the UCF campus. As a UCF researcher, there are several trainings and forms that you must complete to ensure that both you and the animals are kept safe and happy during our research activities. Below is a check-list of the items that you must complete before participating in any purple martin research with us.

Most of these trainings are handled by UCF Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) and they have a lot of information on their website. Most EHS courses are self-paced and are administered through WebCourses. During non-COVID times, practical courses are taught face-to-face.

If you are participating in the UCF Purple Martin Project as a volunteer, you will also need to complete some paperwork through the university, which is available here.

Here is a list of the items you will need to complete:

EHS Lab safety training courses – sign up here

  1. EHS102
  2. EHS103
  3. EHS201
  4. EHS202

EHS Animal exposure program – more info (and forms) here

  1. CentraCare form (needs supervisor signature; goes to CentraCare)
  2. Medical questionnaire (not to be shared with supervisor; goes directly to CentraCare)
  3. Complete EHS108

CITI training for work with vertebrates (required for IACUC compliance) – sign up here

CITI Training Instructions

While we are in COVID-19 times, you will need to complete the UCF COVID self-checker every day that you will be on campus (https://www.ucf.edu/coronavirus/plans-policies/). If you are not receiving academic credit for your research activities with the UCF Purple Martin Project, you will also need to complete a UCF volunteer form, which I will initiate for you.

Some of these training modules take a bit of time to complete. Thus, I advise you to not wait until the last minute to get started. I will not be able to add you to our permits and authorizations until you have completed all components; you will not be able to participate in any research activities until that time. Please let me know if you have any questions or issues accessing any of the trainings.
