Housing Accommodations, Fitness and Sports Activities, Food and Entertainment Arrangements

UCF has several on-campus and off campus housing facilities that can accommodate the 10 students over the 10-week summer period.  REU students will have access to a state-of-art wellness center, indoor and outdoor olympic swimming and tanning pools. tennis, basketball, and volleyball courts, fitness center, etc. In addition, UCF offers a variety of meal plans to students in the two renovated buffet-type (all you can eat) cafeterias serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner 7 days a week for just $5.

 

The proposed REU site will start on May 14, 2018 and will end on July 20, 2018. A variety of academic mini-courses, workshops, research laboratory, field trips, and social activities will be completed during this 10-week summer REU program. All REU Site student participants will have a unique opportunity to visit the UCF Institute for Simulation and Training located in one of the most vibrant  and high tech “Research Park” area adjacent to UCF. Lockheed Martin Aerospace Company, NASA Kennedy Space Center, etc. A detailed description of students’ activities is presented below.

Program Management

The Principal investigator will be responsible for the management of the day-to-day research activities with the collaboration of each senior personnel for the various laboratories. In addition, the P.I. will also hold weekly meetings to address any issues related to students’ progress in their research project.  Additionally, students’ research will be disseminated at various National conferences (e.g., Annual Meeting of the Human Factors, Ergonomics Society, American Psychological Association, etc.) and through journal publications as appropriate. Finally, the proposed research will provide data to inform the development of (1) recommendations and guidelines for in-vehicle telematic design, implementation, and evaluation for elderly drivers, (2) written test procedures for evaluating in-vehicle information and navigation systems in the elderly, and (3) development of a formal rating system such as a consumer report that may be applied on different products for reporting the results and describing the workload.

Broader Impacts

This UCF REU Site will offer various scientific and practical benefits to a group of under-represented students in the field of Cognitive Neuroscience and inter-disciplinary applied psychological sciences. These benefits will include the following:

  1. UCF REU Site students will be mentored by our UCF active faculty researchers and graduate students in the program.  They will be matched with the faculty and graduate student mentors based on their research interests.
  2. UCF REU Site students will work on a research project for the duration of the 10-week period under the supervision of a faculty mentor and graduate researcher.
  3. UCF REU students will take part in a formal research Methods course and learn the various research design and statistical procedures, conduct a literature search, develop testable research ideas, write and submit a research proposal to the UCF IRB, collect and analyze data using a variety of psychophysiological measures, write the report, and present the finding in an open forum.
  4. REU students will participate in a formal library research instruction led by a University Librarian
  5. REU students will take a formal course on ethical research and the code of conduct offered by the UCF IRB and Faculty mentors.
  6. REU students will participate in a formal workshop about applying to graduate school to learn about the application materials, program requirements, research experience, GRE scores, etc. This workshop will be led by the P.I. and the faculty mentors.  This will enable them to prepare a strong and successful application.
  7. REU students will participate in a workshop that prepares them for a successful professional career. Invited speakers from government agencies and private industries will be invited as speakers.
  8. UCF REU students will learn various imaging techniques (e.g., EEG recording and interpretation, ERP Components interpretation and applications, fNIR techniques, Eye-tracking systems, etc.), to assess human behavior and performance a wide variety of simulated environments (e.g., driving under distraction, aggressive “road rage” driving, flight simulated tasks, search and rescue missions, etc.
  9. UCF REU students will learn to use psychological and experimental software to design and build experiments, collecting, coding data, and analyzing data using ePrime, EEGLAB, ERPLAB, SPSS, Autodesk Maya, etc.
  10. UCF REU students will work in a small interactive research groups that will afford them to acquire and use their individual and group teamwork skills that are necessary for graduate school success, as well for preparing them to embark in professional domains where these skills are essential for their hiring and success.
