Students feel worse off than parents

Ask college senior Brooke Steiner if she thinks her generation will be worse off than her parents’ and she doesn’t quibble or hesitate.

“Definitely,” said the 21-year-old UCF marketing major from Davie.

This is astonishing for a number of reasons, but mostly because it conflicts wildly with the expectations we have for ourselves and our children. Upward mobility is like apple pie and fireworks.

But a new Americana is being defined by unemployment, debt and the $7.3 trillion in wealth destroyed by the housing bust.

It’s even more palpable in Florida, where real estate and jobless numbers are especially dismal.
