UCF grads include pro race-car driver Shea Holbrook

A recent Orlando Sentinel article featured a COS graduate.

Shea Holbrook, who graduated with distinction Saturday from the University of Central Florida, already has a good job. And she’s likely the only graduate who wears a fire-retardant jumpsuit and helmet at work.

Holbrook, 22, is a professional race-car driver in the Pirelli World Challenge, a racing series held at different tracks and courses across the country. And Holbrook, who took home a first-place finish at a race in California last year, is holding her own in a sport dominated by men. She graduated with a degree in Interpersonal/Organizational Communication.

Holbrook, of Groveland, joined more than 1,000 students in the UCF Arena on Saturday for the school’s spring graduation. Orange-Osceola Chief Judge Belvin Perry, who presided in the Casey Anthony trial, gave the commencement address.

“The class of 2012 has arrived, and the world will never be the same,” Perry said during his 15-minute speech. He concluded by saying, “Good luck. God bless. Go Knights!”

UCF has held five commencement ceremonies since Thursday to accommodate the more than 7,200 spring graduates — the largest number in the school’s 44-year history. Another milestone was passed Friday, when the 200,000th UCF graduate received a degree.
