New Director of NCFS Announced

The college congratulates Dr. Michael Sigman on his new position as the Director of the National Center for Forensic Science.

Dr. Sigman earned a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Florida State University in 1986 and was a National Institutes of Health postdoctoral fellow at the University of Illinois and University of Chicago.  He held research positions at Dow Chemical and Oak Ridge National Laboratory.  Sigman joined UCF in 2002 as Assistant Director of Physical Evidence at NCFS with a joint position in Chemistry, and was promoted to Professor of Chemistry this year.  He received a national “R&D 100” award for developing air-sampling techniques in 1997.  At UCF, he has received TIP and RIA awards and has
been a member of ORC’s Millionaires Club.  His research activities are in the area of physical evidence, focusing on chemical and statistical analysis of ignitable liquids, explosives, fibers, inks and glass.  He is sought after nationally and internationally for his expertise in the detection of trace explosives.

Sigman’s goal as Director is to build on the strength of the center’s current faculty, foster opportunities for collaboration within UCF, and develop NCFS into a national leader in forensic science research.
