International Crisis & Risk Communication Conference

The Nicholson School of Communication at the University of Central Florida will host the 2011 International Crisis & Risk Communication Conference. The conference “New Trends and Technology Impacts in Crisis Communication in the 21st Century,” is scheduled to take place in the UCF Student Union on Tuesday, May 10 from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Wednesday, May 11, from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This global conference will bring together leaders, researchers, and experts from the government and private industries to facilitate an international dialogue about how we can collectively understand, adapt and respond to the significant crisis communication challenges faced in the changed landscape of evolving social media and new communication technologies.

Lessons about the role, functions, limitations and dysfunctions of social media learned from disasters such as SARS and H1N1, the 9/11 terror attacks, Hurricane Katrina, Haitian Earthquake and the Gulf Oil Spill Crisis continue to challenge crisis communicators. Employees and former employees from organizations such as BP, Homeland Security, FEMA, AirTran Airways, Walt Disney World and internationally recognized academicians will discuss how to effectively inform, warn, and persuade audiences in a transformed landscape of communication technologies and platforms.

The 2011 International Crisis & Risk Communication Conference will provide invaluable opportunities for networking with others who are struggling with the challenges of crisis and risk communication and also with responding to the new realities of rapidly developing social media technology.
