Dr. Corzine featured as expert

Dr. Jay Corzine is a professor in UCF’s Department of Sociology.

Corzine is best known for his research on violence, including lynching in the postbellum South and homicide in the contemporary U.S. Other areas of research during his career include substance abuse, the effectiveness of policy interventions in reducing crime levels, the development of subcultures, the relationship between neighborhood characteristics and crime, crime prevention and the role of firearms in lethal and non-lethal violence. He was a consultant to the Mayor’s Safe Orlando Task Force and has been widely quoted in the Orlando Sentinel and on local radio and television stations, as well as in newspapers in New York, Washington D.C. and other cities.

At UCF, Corzine teaches in the areas of criminology and research methodology. He is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Society of Criminology and the American Sociological Association, and he is especially active in the interdisciplinary Homicide Research Working Group and the Futures Working Group. He is a former co-editor of the journal Homicide Studies.

After completing his doctorate at Washington University (St. Louis) in 1977, he was a faculty member at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for 18 years before joining UCF as department chair in 1996.
