PoliSci Degree Sets Up Successful Insurance Career

John Garceau’s successful career in the insurance business was built, in part, on the foundation of a Political Science degree from UCF.

Garceau entered UCF after service as a signalman for the Navy. The G.I. Bill allowed him to pursue a philosophy degree, but, with extra credits available, Garceau also chose Political Science.

With the economy in recession at graduation, Garceau took on the best job he could find: building inspections for an insurance agency. There was a bit of learning curve, Garceau said, but over time he began to decipher the contracts and get a deeper understanding of the business.

“The political science degree helped me communicate with homeowners,” Garceau said.

After gathering enough experience, Garceau struck out on his own and started his own insurance company. Business Insurance Services, Inc., thrived for 17 years in Orlando, and opened new opportunities for Garceau, like a visit one of the most storied insurance agencies, Lloyd’s of London. His community service included serving as president of the downtown Orlando Rotary Club.

Garceau sold his company to a larger company in Orlando and stayed on for several more years before retiring. UCF has remained a constant through his career, including 30 years as a season ticket holder.

“The quality of the education only continues to climb,” Garceau said.
