Students head to National Model United Nations Conference
On November 15th, a group of students from the United Nations Association at UCF traveled to Atlanta, Georgia to compete in the Southern Regional Model United Nations Conference.
During their four days at SRMUN, these students displayed their knowledge about international politics in various mock UN committees. They brought their ideas to the table in an organized and persuasive matter in order to diplomatically reach resolutions about real-life problems facing their generation.
In addition to global understanding, UNA at UCF brought home a number of awards. Tracie Smith and Marina Salcedo, representing Uruguay in the General Assembly, earned an award in their committee as well as the committee awards granted to Michael Mann, Kevin Sopko, and Mariah Coughlin. In addition to these talented students’ individual awards, UCF was granted an Outstanding Delegation award for their collective hard work and impressive diplomacy.
Following UNA’s success at SRMUN, the group will be traveling to New York, New York in March to compete against thousands of students from all around the world in the National Model United Nations Conference.
The United Nations Association of the University of Central Florida is dedicated to educating students about international affairs and cooperation, as promoted by the United Nations, and is committed to the promotion of the basic goals of the United Nations, which include international peace, security, and respect for human rights. UNA-UCF promotes these principles through its activities in Model U.N.
Model United Nations is the authentic simulation of the United Nations General Assembly and its specialized agencies and multilateral bodies. By joining Model U.N. programs, students actively participate in the world of diplomacy and negotiation by taking on the roles of ambassadors from U.N. member states to debate international issues. Students prepare draft resolutions, plan strategy and negotiate with supporters and adversaries in the interest of promoting international cooperation to resolve conflicts. Each semester UNA-UCF sends a student delegation to Model U.N. conferences around the country.
