UCF bids for energy hub that could boost Brevard economy

The former Intersil building in Palm Bay could become part of a cutting-edge research push exploring batteries and energy storage if a Central Florida bid for the multi-million dollar effort is chosen by the federal government.

The Department of Energy intends to establish an Energy Innovation Hub for Batteries and Energy Storage.

“Our bid is in,” Lynda Weatherman, president and CEO of the Economic Development Commissioin of Florida’s Space Coast, said today. Weatherman will present details of the county’s proposal to the county commission on Tuesday and to the Palm Bay City Council on Thursday.

Local matching funds are not required for the bid, which could lead to an economy-boosting injection of research and development on the Space Coast and at the University of Central Florida, which is leading the effort.
