2015 UCF College Showcase
The UCF College of Sciences will once again participate in the UCF College Showcase during UCF Family Weekend. Family Weekend, taking place September 18-20, is a UCF annual tradition bringing together families and students to create memories that will last a lifetime.
Events taking place throughout the weekend include campus tours, The Understudy play at the UCF Theater, Jurassic World Movie Knight, College Showcase, and tailgate pre-game and the home football game at 6pm as the UCF Knights take on Furman in the Brighthouse Networks Stadium home game.
College showcase provides an opportunity for the colleges at UCF to showcase their different areas of research and what they have to offer. This year, the showcase will take place on Saturday, September 19, from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., outside of the student union. Attendees include the College of Arts & Humanities, College of Education & Human Performance, College of Engineering & Computer Science, College of Health & Public Affairs, College of Optics & Photonics, College of Sciences, and Interdisciplinary Studies.
At the event, the College of Sciences will showcase the department of physics, the department of biology and the College of Sciences Academic Services.
The department of physics will be showcasing its planetary sciences exploration through several activities:
- Sun and Moon observation through telescope (weather permitting)
- Creating artificial comets with dry ice
- Meteorite activities
The department of biology will be showcasing its current oyster reef and “living shoreline” restoration efforts in Florida.
- Touch tank displays of estuarine biodiversity
- Hands-on building of oyster mats for restoring oyster reefs in the Indian River Lagoon
- Free distribution of children’s books on marine conservation co-authored by Dr. Linda Walters, her students and colleagues
Representatives from the College of Sciences Academic Services (COSAS) will also be present with more information about the UCF College of Sciences and the degree programs offered through our ten departments/school.
