CNN analyst Peter Bergen speaks at UCF

Below is an article from a COS journalism student that ran in the Orlando Sentinel.

Five months after a team of U.S. Navy SEALs raided a secret suburban compound killing al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden, CNN national security analyst Peter Bergen spoke to an audience at the University of Central Florida Tuesday about the future prospects of terrorism.

The award-winning journalist and best-selling author opened up with remarks just moments after news broke that U.S. officials had foiled an Iranian plot to assassinate Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to the United States.

“As it happens, there was a story in the last hour which reminds us that the threat of terrorism is not over,” Bergen said at a forum organized by the university’s Office of Global Perspectives. “Terrorism has been around for thousands of years; it’s not going to disappear.”

Bergen acknowledged that terrorism poses a threat, but he suggested that such a risk doesn’t warrant paranoia.
