Whether you’re interested in restoring nature trails or enhancing your gardening skills, the UCF Arboretum wants you to be its newest volunteer.
Officials at the 82-acre on-campus nature preserve are searching for a team of volunteers to help care for the expansive property during the summer.
Students who volunteer can work on an array of hands-on projects including landscaping, urban forestry and even cultivating organic crops in the Arboretum’s community garden.
“We encourage students to match their skills and interests with the different projects for that day,” Arboretum program coordinator Tina Richards said. “Students interested in careers related to forestry or land management might find the natural areas or urban forestry opportunities very beneficial because of the exposure to native flora and fauna in Florida’s scrub habitats and wetlands.”
During the spring 2013 semester, the Arboretum’s 300 student volunteers contributed a combined 1,300 hours of service.
“Ever since I started volunteering with the UCF Arboretum about four years ago I’ve learned so much about organic gardening and Florida’s cool plants and animals,” Sarah Parker, a senior with a major in environmental studies, said. “Surprisingly, I’ve also learned a lot about myself. It’s a pretty sweet deal, if you ask me.”
Volunteers can earn incentives upon completing service hours including Arboretum bumper stickers, tote bags and organic T-shirts. Students who give more than 75 hours of their time also receive certificates.
Starting from August 20th- December 6th 2013, the fall 2013 Volunteer Schedule is as follows:
Tuesdays: 8-10 AM General Volunteering
Thursdays: 8-10 AM General Volunteering
Fridays: 8-10 AM General Volunteering
