COMM Week 2014: Sharpen Your Professional Communications Skills

COMM weekOn March 17-22, the Nicholson School of Communication (NSC) will host COMM Week. COMM Week is a week of professional development to help students transition to the workplace. Nationally renowned speakers will share insights on how to jump-start careers. Sessions include résumé reviews, personal finance workshops and technology tips across the communication career spectrum, among many other vital topics. Attendees will learn new ideas and strategies for keeping their skills current in the changing communication landscape. UCF alumni are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Monday, March 17, 2014: Tech Commons Day

Join the experts at Tech Commons for informational sessions on the latest software and products for your office. Additionally, there will be a Creative Suite workshop.

Tuesday, March 18, 2014: Dress for Success

You need to look the part of a professional, but how do you do that on a college budget? Fashion and shopping experts from SteinMart will help you find the right looks for the right price. This session will be held in the Cape Florida Ballroom CD from 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

Wednesday, March 19, 2014: Fpra Presents Bob Davis C-Day

Join us as we go back to the roots of Comm Week with a casual pizza party, provided by the Orlando chapter of Fpra, at Lake Claire in honor of C-Day founder, Dr. Bob Davis. The event starts at 5:30 p.m. and ends at 8 p.m

Thursday, March 20, 2014: Personal Finance Workshop

How many credit cards should I have? What’s a “business expense?” Should I pay for my own health insurance? And Why am I paying Social Security? Get the key tips that can make the difference between staying in debt and having real disposable income. The Personal Finance Workshop will take place from 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. in Hec 110.

Friday, March 21, 2014: Résumé Review

How do you know that your “one sheet” says what you want it to say? And should you put “objectives” on your résumé? Recruiting professionals from some of the top companies in the area will help you sharpen your résumé or portfolio so that you’re in the “call back” pile. Reviews are by appointment only and will be from 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. in the Fairwinds Alumni Center.

Friday, March 21, 2014: Reception, Keynote and Awards

Join us for a networking reception with keynote speaker and NSC alumna Marci Gonzalez, a correspondent or ABC News’ affiliate news service, NewsOne, based in New York. Outstanding students of the year will also be honored. The reception runs from 5:30 p.m. – 9 p.m. at the Fairwinds Alumni Center.

Saturday, March 22, 2014: Weekend Workshop

This all-day workshop series will delve into topics that reach across all programs within the communication field. For a description of the workshops offered, please click here. The workshops begin at 8:30 a.m. and run until 5 p.m.

Parking information: Regular student parking applies during weekday events. Park in Garage H (valid Ucf decal or one-day permit required). Garage F is free for all Ucf events, but it is further from the event venues.

Tickets must be purchased in advance and cost $20 until March 16. Tickets purchased during COMM Week will be $25. For more information and to purchase tickets, please click here.

All sessions are free to all Nicholson School of Communication students, but paid registration gets you meals on Friday and Saturday, priority seating at all events and reservations for one-on-one resume/portfolio critiques.
