Wednesday, February 11, the Cape Florida Ballroom on the third floor of the Student Union was filled with the buzz of students eager to network with representatives from local and national organizations.  The Sociology Department, along with the College of Sciences and Career Services, hosted their second annual Sociology Career Day.

Over 160 students and recent alumni visited this year’s career day, which is close to four times the amount that visited last year.  Students had the opportunity to mingle from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., handing out resumes and receiving business cards in the hope of making a connection that would lead to a future internship or job opportunity.

Approximately 33 representatives from 20 different organizations were in attendance. Last year’s career day hosted about 10 organizations, so the participation in this area doubled this year.  Also, half of the organization’s representives were UCF alumni.  Organizations such as the FBI, Target, Feeding Children Everywhere and the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office were represented.

As Sergeant Brad McDaniel from the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office explained to the College of Sciences Dean, Michael Johnson, “we are always excited to recruit students from UCF, and the Department of Sociology has excellent students.”

The members of the Sociology Career Day organizational team are excited about the growth of the event and look forward to future growth in future years.

According to Lin Huff-Corzine, Professor and Undergraduate Program Coordinator in the Sociology Department, “What a difference a year makes!  At this second annual Career Day we saw about two times the number of agencies and nearly four times more students in attendance. Having representatives from among the undergraduate Sociology majors, the Sociology Department, the College of Sciences, and the university working together for a common cause made this event a huge success!”
