Graduate Students

The Aquatic Biogeochemistry Lab (ABL) is currently seeking applications from prospective M.S. or Ph.D. students for Fall 2024 who are interested in applied ecosystem ecology, particularly the biogeochemical cycling of carbon and nutrients in wetlands, coastal areas, and man-made stormwater treatment systems. The ideal students will hold a B.S. (for the M.S. position) or M.S. (for the Ph.D. position) in Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Soil Science, or a related field, have experience working in soils, wetlands, and/or coastal ecosystems, and strong analytic laboratory skills. The position is fully-funded through a combination of a GTA and/or GRA assistantship and includes a tuition waiver.

Applicants with research experience, competitive GPAs, and the ability to articulate their research interests and goals will be viewed most favorably. Before contacting me, please review the UCF Biology graduate program and our past publication. To be chosen for a position in the ABL, you must be a top applicant, as indicated by your past academic performance and research experience, your ability to express your future goals and research interests, and how well these fit within the scope of work the ABL is presently doing. Good written and oral communication skills, a willingness to work hard and learn new things, self-motivation, and a positive attitude are also important for success.

Prospective graduate students should email me at: lisa.chambers@ucf.edu.  Include in your email, 1) why you are interested in joining my lab (i.e., how your research interests and experiences fit with what we are currently studying), 2) what topics or questions you hope to research during your graduate education, and 3) an attachment that includes a current copy of your CV/resume indicating your GPA.  Please put “prospective grad student” in the subject line.

Note the application deadline for the 2024 Fall semester is December 1, 2023. Applicants should seek encouragement to apply from Dr. Chambers first. Applications are submitted to the UCF Department of Biology online and require a B.S. degree in Biology or related discipline, a GPA > 3.0 (or international equivalent), three strong and letters of recommendation, a CV / résumé, and an Essay / Personal Statement.
