Anthropology Online Program Ranks No. 1 in Country

BestColleges.com has ranked the Anthropology Department’s online program No. 1 in the U.S.

Anthropology’s fully online major became available to students during the 2016-17 academic year. In just two years the number of anthropology majors pursuing an online bachelor’s degree in anthropology has grown from 3 percent to 15 percent.

The BestColleges.com ranking is a reflection of the high quality of teaching in UCF Anthropology’s online classes. Two faculty, for instance, received the prestigious Chuck Dziuban Award for Online Teaching—a university-wide honor. The program is unique in being taught by regular department faculty, who bring their extensive research and field experience into the virtual classroom.

Online students in the program represents a wide variety of backgrounds, from working professionals to parents and active military. Despite being off-campus, online students can engage in the same kinds of research experiences as on-campus students. A recent online graduate, for instance, completed a bachelor’s level thesis in the Honor’s College and was awarded a prestigious Fulbright Fellowship to teach English in India. All online students are transfer students from community colleges, and typically enter the program as a junior.

The program covers all of Anthropology’s major subdisciplines: archaeology, cultural anthropology, biological anthropology, and linguistics. Online courses also cover most world regions and many historical or ancient time periods, with online classes covering topics as diverse as the Vikings, modern cultures of Southeast Asia, ancient Florida, and the undead.
