Second Annual ACS Florida Chemistry Conclave

The Student Chapter of the American Chemical Society (ACS) at the University of Central Florida (UCF) hosted chemistry students from across Florida attending the Second Annual ACS Florida Chemistry Conclave, held on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2017.

The goal of the Conclave is to promote the bonds between student chapters of ACS across Florida, to help chemistry undergraduates develop their professional network, and enrich their understanding of the chemistry profession.

The Second Annual Conclave brought together over 40 students from Florida State University, University of Southern Florida, Stetson University, Rollins College, Valencia College, Florida Institute of Technology, and Florida Polytechnic University to UCF’s main campus for a full day of activities focused on networking, professional development and research.

Students participated in discussions led by guest speaker Jonathan Beever, Ph.D., focused on ethics and responsible conduct in science. Beever is an assistant professor of philosophy at UCF and an expert in scientific ethics. The Conclave activities also included student-research presentations, networking with professional chemists, information about graduate studies in chemistry, a Jeopardy-style chemistry competition, and free lunch and refreshments.

The Second Annual Conclave was co-sponsored by the Orlando Section of ACS and the UCF Department of Chemistry, College of Sciences, College of Graduate Studies, College of Engineering and Computer Science, and the College of Optics and Photonics (CREOL).  The Conclave was supported by an Inter-Chapter Relations Grant awarded by the national ACS for a proposal jointly submitted by the ACS and science clubs at UCF, FIT, Rollins, Stetson, Valencia College, Seminole State Collage, and the Orlando Section of ACS.

The Third-Annual Conclave will be hosted by ACS@FIT, with organizational assistance from ACS@UCF.  If you would like to become involved or help support next year’s Conclave, please contact Stephen Kuebler, Ph.D., at kuebler@ucf.edu.
