Student Ambassador Program Offers Development Opportunities for Biology Student

Biology student Andrea Vasquez returns this year as a College of Sciences student ambassador. She brings her experience as an ambassador last year along with her passion for student engagement. Vasquez believes all students should be able to express themselves and their passions—and the ambassador program is a great way to do that.

“I was thrilled when Andrea returned as an ambassador this year. She brings a fresh perspective and radiates positivity at every event, from pop-up socials to greeting COS alumni and supporters as they visit and tour campus,” shared Nicholson School of Communication and Media Associate Lecturer Michelle Dusseau, Ph.D. She supervises the ambassadors as part of her faculty fellowship with the COS Dean’s Office.

“I became an ambassador to advocate for everyone under the College of Sciences. No matter your major, your age, your GPA, everything, we’re here to advocate for you,” said Vasquez, who plans to pursue a career in environmental advocacy.

She joined the inaugural COS Student Ambassador Program in Summer 2022. Over a year later, she’s continuing to make an impact along with her fellow ambassadors as they attend events, advocate for students and network with alumni. Vasquez said, “[The ambassadors] are a great group of people I wouldn’t have met otherwise because of our different majors and interests.”

Her favorite part about her experience in the ambassador program so far are the connections formed with her fellow ambassadors. The ambassadors often meet bi-monthly to plan events, discuss ideas for student engagement and work together on special projects.

Vasquez said the program is designed for a diverse group of students. “The ambassador program is not limited to those who have a 4.0 GPA or are involved in every student organization imaginable, because that does not represent the average student in the College of Sciences.”

Vasquez shared that she has learned irreplaceable skills through the ambassador program, and it’s pushed her out of her comfort zone.
