A Picture is worth around 300 Words: Visual Representation of Descriptive Data

August 21, 2015 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

A picture is worth around 900 words visual representation of descriptive data.

Dr. Clayton Thyne will present “A Picture is worth around 300 Words: Visual Representation of Descriptive Data”.

Scholars frequently explain their data either in a sentence or in a table, often providing only information about the mean and standard deviation.  This approach not only eats up precious space in a manuscript, but often hides spatial variation and is fairly boring.  In this workshop, Clayton Thyne will provide some a simple overview of how to present data in a way that is more visually-appealing and useful to the reader than what we commonly see in published work.  The discussion will focus primarily on descriptive statistics (e.g., maps), though extensions will be made to bi-variate analyses and post-estimation if time allows.

Clayton Thyne is an Associate Professor in the Political Science department at the University of Kentucky. He serves as the Director of Graduate Studies and the Director of the Peace Studies program at UK . His research currently focuses on domestic conflict/instability, coups d’état, regime types and democratization, and international education policy.

All students and faculty are welcome to attend.
