“The Four Things You Need To Know About The Geotechnical Properties Of Lunar Soil”

Summary
The Lunar Sourcebook contains a compilation of all the lunar geotechnical measurements that were made during the Luna, Lunokhod, Surveyor, and Apollo missions (see Chapter 9), including such topics as bearing capacity and trafficability. This presentation focuses on the four most important properties that even non-geotechnical engineers should know: particle size distribution of the lunar soil, particle shapes, bulk density, and relative density. There will also be a brief discussion of the geotechnical implications regarding exploration of permanently shadowed regions near the lunar poles.
