This program emphasizes methodological skills and academic scholarship for career success. Coursework offers advanced training across key areas, including crime and deviance, domestic violence, and social inequality.

Application Requirements

  • The GRE is not required for admission to this program.
  • Three letters of recommendation, including at least two from academic sources familiar with the applicant’s academic abilities.
  • A personal statement of 250-500 words identifying areas of research interest as it connected to thematic areas of UCF Sociology, faculty with whom they would like to work, and describing the applicant’s academic and professional experience and goals.
  • Applicants applying to this program who have attended a college/university outside the United States must provide one official transcript and official certification of degree, with date awarded. See the Sample Country Requirements page for country specific requirements.

The applicant’s records will be reviewed on an individual basis for academic deficiencies and evaluated to assess their potential for success in the program. Supplemental course work may be recommended.

Final admission is based on evaluation of the applicant’s abilities, past performance, recommendations, match of this program to the applicant’s career/academic goals, and the applicant’s potential for completing the degree. Note also that there is no automatic connection between acceptance as a non-degree-seeking student and acceptance into this degree-granting program.


Sociology Ph.D.

This program prepares students for careers in academia, as well as research and other applied settings in the private, public, and nonprofit sectors. Students gain a strong foundation in theory, qualitative and quantitative, and analytical methods.

  • Three letters of recommendation, (where possible) at least two from academic sources regarding the applicant’s potential for success in the program.
  • A 250-500 word personal statement identifying the area of research interest as it relates to the thematic areas of UCF Sociology, faculty with whom they would like to work with and a description of the applicant’s academic and professional experiences and goals.
  • Résumé or Curriculum Vitae.
  • A writing sample, at least 2,500 words demonstrating the ability to complete advanced graduate work.
  • Applicants applying to this program who have attended a college/university outside the United States must provide one official transcript and official certification of degree, with date awarded. If you will be requesting transfer credit, a course-by-course evaluation from World Education Services (WES) or Josef Silny and Associates, Inc. must be submitted.
