• Sociology B.A. — broad study of social life, institutions, and inequality.
• Sociology B.S. — sociology with an additional approved methods course.

• Sociology B.S.: Crime, Law, and Deviance Track — crime, victimization, law, and society’s responses to harm.
• Social Sciences B.S. — an interdisciplinary degree built around three approved minors from different departments or schools.

Both Sociology degrees include statistics, research methods, and a data analysis capstone. The B.A. requires language proficiency equivalent to two semesters of college instruction in a foreign language or American Sign Language. The B.S. requires an additional approved methods course and has no additional foreign language graduation requirement.

The Medical Sociology and Crime, Law, and Deviance B.S. tracks also include focused electives and approved interdisciplinary coursework. Ask advising which option fits your interests and completed credits.

Yes. The Sociology B.A. and B.S., including both specialized B.S. tracks, may be completed fully online. The STS Certificate also has a fully online option. Elective choices and prerequisites can affect your plan; not every course is offered online every term.

The 15-credit Science, Technology, and Society (STS) Certificate examines how scientific knowledge and technological change interact with ethics, culture, policy, institutions, and inequality.

Complete SYP 2422 – Science, Technology, and Society, two approved Humanities electives, and two approved Social Science electives. At least 12 credits must be earned at UCF.

Sociology courses can complement study in health, business, education, criminal justice, technology, and other fields. Check each course’s prerequisites and enrollment restrictions in myUCF before registering.

Ask your home-program advisor how a course will count toward your degree. Sociology advising can help you explore a minor or the STS Certificate.

A second major is possible when you complete the requirements for both programs. Meet with advising before making a change to review course overlap, catalog-year rules, and your graduation timeline.

Most students declare or change programs through myUCF. UCF Online students and some other student groups use a different process. Follow the Registrar’s current declaration instructions.

Transfer courses may satisfy requirements when UCF recognizes the appropriate equivalency. Lower-division coursework does not substitute for upper-division requirements. If a course needs evaluation, use the COSAS course evaluation resource and provide the requested syllabus or course description.

Sociology’s published requirements include at least 24 credits of regularly scheduled 3000–4000-level courses taken within the UCF Sociology Department. University residency rules are separate, including completing 30 of the last 39 credits at UCF. Discuss transfer plans with advising.

Sociology develops skills in research, data analysis, critical thinking, and clear communication. These skills support work in research, community organizations, public agencies, healthcare organizations, human resources, and related fields, as well as graduate or professional study.

Use electives, research, and internships to build experience related to your goals. Some careers require additional education, licensure, or professional training.

Start with your degree audit and the requirements for your specific degree, track, minor, or certificate. An elective that counts for one program may not satisfy another program’s restricted elective requirements.

Applied Social Statistics and Research Methods build the foundation for the Data Analysis capstone. Plan these courses early:

• SYA 3400C – Applied Social Statistics (4 credits)
• SYA 4300C – Research Methods (4 credits)
• SYA 4450 – Data Analysis: Capstone (4 credits)

Work with advising to complete the capstone prerequisites before enrolling. Check myUCF for current prerequisites, enrollment restrictions, and term offerings.

Identify the error first. A prerequisite error, instructor-consent requirement, full class, and time conflict each follow a different override process.

Use the COSAS override instructions. Instructor consent requires written approval from the instructor; closed-class requests require department approval. Submit the required documentation through the College of Sciences Override Request Form. Approval is not guaranteed, and instructor consent does not bypass a waitlist.

Yes, with department approval before enrollment. For internship credit, review eligibility and placement requirements, identify a suitable supervised placement, and contact the Undergraduate Program Director to arrange approval and registration.

The department’s sociology minors are intended for students majoring in fields other than Sociology. If you are a Sociology major, explore a complementary minor or certificate in another field with advising, and check the rules for course overlap.

Yes. Sociology B.A. and B.S. students, including both B.S. tracks, must complete the departmental assessment exam near the end of their final semester. It carries no course credit or grade.
